Fibre rollout in my area
« on: October 10, 2025, 02:24:38 PM »

Hi All

Has anyone had two competing fibre companies installing their infrastructure at the same time? The road i live on currently has Wildanet ( cornish fttp provider ) and Openreach installing at the same time.  My road is served by 7 poles rather than underground, currently have wildanet with their hardware on 3 of them and openreach have prepared 2 other poles.

As they usually are using Openreach ducting/poles then its quite common the second Openreach have verified all ducts are clear and poles are structurally safe, that an alt-net will swoop in to try and be live first.  For me it was Virgin who tried to beat Openreach.

In this case, Wildanet were 1st to start installing their equipment. One pole now has equipment for both companies. I'll get some pictures shortly.

Oh, yes.  I got the distinct impression round here that OR's main mover for getting their finger out was when an altnet started installing!

I fully imagine they either have areas planned in advance waiting for build or a process to prioritise them when commercial reasons require it. An altnet arriving in an area where they've had all the business to themselves is definitely a strong commercial reason. It would be irrational for them not to respond and I'm completely bemused when people try and claim they don't do this.  :)

The PIA system will be handy for OR to know someone is doing a rollout in a specific area, let the alt net pay something for the clearing the ducts, then the area becomes viable for a OR rollout as it now has a FTTP competitor and ducts already cleared.

Found out eariler today that i can now order FTTP. Long wait until the 16th now   Openreach appear to have trumped Wildanet on getting their equipment ready for service.

OR weren't interested in my street - not in plan, at all.

Virgin Media dug our pavements at the very end of 2023, they went live June 2024.

Funny then - all of a sudden in March 2024, OR decided they were building, and I had live OR service by April 2024!
