Win10/11 Upgrade
« on: September 18, 2025, 05:16:49 PM »

Looking at my widow'ed neighbours Dell Inspiron 3470 i5 Desktop PC, approx 5 years old, running Win10 Home with view to upgrading to Win11.
Windows upgrade page showing "not meeting minimum requirements for Win11 upgrade" as would be expected.
Running Microsoft "PC Health Check app" shows incompatability with TPM version only.
Running "WhyNotWin11" check utility indicated the same.
Could not find any BIOS settings to rectify this.

Updated the BIOS and system drivers from the Dell web site, BIOS was well out of date.
Now after a few tweeks of the BIOS settings the TPM incompatibility issue was gone as indicated by the check utilities.
Strange thing is, Win update window still shows "not meeting min. requirements for Win11"?
Can only attribute this to having activated the 1 year "Extended Security Updates" feature as an interim measure?

I'am now convinced that the Win11 upgrade should be possible.
So, what measures should I take before attempting an upgrade?
The OS is on a 120Gb M2 SATA SSD, I have made and stored a full image of this.
Most of the owners personal data, doc's, photos etc. is on a separate 1Tb HD.

You need to be specific about the reason now given for incompatibility as some need "trickery" to overcome.
As for TPM issues, many Dell models CAN be upgraded from TPM1.2 to TPM2.0 and I believe that model range, in general, can be. It's usually a simple utility downloaded from Dell support and there's no reason to avoid doing it.
TPM doesn't need to be "active/enabled" though, just "available" and visible in the BIOS.

As a general comment Windows 11 is really just Windows 10.1 so, provided there's no blatant hardware issues I just treat it a regular "large update".

@HPsauce:
Thanks for the reply and interest.

As stated, the two test utilities are now indicating no incompatibility, ie, ready to upgrade, only the Windows update GUI page is showing "not meeting min. requirements for Win11" for whatever reason, also now indicating ESU support is active.

As soon as I get consent from the PC owner and double check backups of any personal data I'll give the update a go.
