ESandSES
« on: July 16, 2025, 03:27:17 PM »

I have a DrayTek 2866ac router which appears to be susceptible to RFI (radio frequency intereference).  This shows up in bursts of ES (Errrored Seconds) and also SES (Severely Errored Seconds).  The puzzle I have is when the RFI ends, these bursts - 10,20 or more - continue for about 10 minutes then stop and could start again later.  Since the DLM uses this information to determine line stability then SYNC rate can be adjusted down.  This is not good.  This seems to be internal to the router since a power cycle will stop these errors appearing. It is not sufficient to drop the DSL link.  A power cycle is needed.  I use a Raspberry Pi to monitor all the router stats every 5 minutes 24/7 and plot pertinent details and save all instances of ES/SES.  Question: Does anyone have experience of unusual ES/SES occuring?  (JMN)

I had a similar issue with a Netgear router some years ago. It had been fine for a few years and then would start clocking up huge numbers of ES for no apparent reason. Power cycling would, as in your case, stop this for a while. I decided it was faulty, changed it, and have not had the issue on any router since.

I quite often get periods where the errors continue after a burst of ES.   The background info is that every single morning I get a quick burst of SHINE for which Ive been unable to track down the culprit.  Although it occurs daily, it's never at the same time but mostly between 09:00 to 11:30am. I will get a rapid burst of errors.  Sometimes only a few but occasionally it will continue to accrue until I reboot the modem.

This topic is something I have mentioned on this forum numerous times and I must also have made reference to it several dozen times over the years. Its the reason I have DSLstats set up to send me an alert if any of the errors exceed a certain amount.  I then have the router plugged in to a TPlink smart plug which allows me to power cycle the modem even if I'm not at home.

I've been doing this for years - dating back to the time when members of the kitz forum beta tested TPLinks smart plug before it was available to the UK general public and before there were any other smart plugs on the market allowing me to remote reboot if not at home, so that has to be a good 10 years ago. I seldom get out these days due to mobility,  but previously there were countless times that I managed to power cycle using this setup before the DLM noticed

It's like a high burst of noise causes the errors to stick, there have been times when for some reason or other Ive not been able to reboot and the Error Secs will continue to increase, whilst CRCs/FEC type errors will flatline hit graph max appx 30k.  Its not unique to my Zyxel modem and has occurred when using other modems inc the HG612.

From what I remember, if I got ES, they usually were not noticeable on my service, but SES were.

Every line will get errors of some sort, and there will be I suppose a natural amount for the line, but its one's that come on alongside specific events, or just in a bursty temporary nature which would typically be considered something to look at.
