Line capped
« on: June 28, 2025, 08:53:59 AM »

Hi all,

I moved into a new home a couple of years ago and took over the line with the same provider and didn't really do any digging into line stats or anything, but I recently moved provider and I'm running my own router with the HG612 and decided to have a look. I remember my sync speed on my old Sky router being a solid 60 down and 20 up but never really took any notice. Running stats last week I was getting these, so I decided to run the maxdatarate command (thanks for having some great threads on this btw) and I monitored the stats over the past week. I went from Retransmission Low originally to Retransmission High and I've just seen that I'm now back on Retransmission Low. The attainable has shot up (which I believe is now at target 3dB).

Before the cap I put on:

My question is, to remove the maxdatarate that I put on over a week ago, should I now reboot my HG612 modem and if so, what's the best way of doing so?

Thanks

Hi

Im glad that it worked for you :)  The maxDataRate survives any DLM resyncs but not any modem power downs.
If you wish to remove any cap you set, then the easiest way is to simply power down your modem.

If you wish, you can keep power off for 30mins before switching back on again to avoid the DLM seeing a retrain in the same 15 min bin.. but this really shouldn't be necessary if you are only doing the one reboot which the DLM should ignore.   Its only if you start messing around and causing several resyncs that you will trigger the wrath of the DLM.

ETA
PS

Just be aware that if the DLM is not set at retransmission low and 3db, you will be performing on the edge of the highest possible xDSL sync without much room for error protection.  This is fantastic for stable lines.  I only mention it  to keep an eye open for any errors - in which case the DLM will start reversing 'x'Db and retransmission low.

Thanks for the reply, and thank you for providing such useful information on your forum. I'm glad it worked too. I have a feeling that the line has been banded for a while and I've never really taken notice. I only decided to get geeky upon switching ISP and thought I'd have a play around. I am planning on keeping the cap on for a few more days, but the line has held on 50/20 now for over a week and has stayed synced for nearly 3 days now with 0 ES. Attainable has stayed the same now and INPRein is back to 0 after going to 1 so will see if there are any more changes and if not, will reboot the modem at some point at the end of the week and see what happens!

Another question!

We had a failed Gfast installation a few weeks ago as the engineer couldn't get it to sync. From looking into the stats now, would the line being banded/capped at 60/20 have affected the ability for Gfast to sync or not? They were trying to reuse the existing line so I guess they just re-patched it in the cabinet from FTTC to Gfast.

We gave up as we the engineer said we are likely too far from the cabinet (roughly 430m). The attn (dB) I'm seeing on the stats is 15.5.

I'm a bit surprised it was offered on a 15.5dB line.  AFAIK its only supposed to be offered to lines capable of syncing 80Mbps on FTTC.  300m is about the practical limit for g.fast to be beneficial.

G.Fast uses higher frequencies than VDSL to get faster speeds. Higher frequencies = shorter distance and more prone to interference.  Theoretically this means a line that syncs at 80Mbps on VDSL2 might see a slower sync speed on g.fast.  However G.fast utilises vectoring which is a noise cancellation technology that can help stability and reduce crosstalk.  The results of g.fast in the wild has been a bit of a mixed bag; its been a bit troublesome for some users, but for others it has given them a fairly decent increase in speed.  Personally I'd only recommend it if your line was stable and <200m.  It was never available to me on a 11.5dB line.  My daughter had a stable 80Mbps vdsl line at 9dB that got an initial g.fast sync speed of 240Mbps but unfortunately it frequently lost sync and had periods of no connectivity. Openreach came out several times but she got fed up of the disconnections and after a year went back to vdsl2.

I agree.

Absolutely not.
First and foremost is that the cap was on your VDSL2 modem configured for vdsl2 frequencies and modulation. This would not affect sync attempts using a g.fast modem or an engineer using his test equipment. It wouldnt even affect an engineer checking vdsl2 sync when using his test equip.

That makes sense, I just had one of those moments and thought could it have been related?

Just an update on my line too, I rebooted the modem just before 1pm and I'm now syncing at 73mbps!

Excellent result. I'm glad it worked for you and I hope that your line remains error free. \o/

Getting the DLM to set the retransmission low profile is often the most stubborn. Setting a temp cap is often the only way to get DLM to move no matter how stable the line appears to be.   At the end of the day though, it should be remembered that the DLM is there for a reason and some lines do need the higher profile to maintain stability.

There was no way a 72Mbps line was ever going to get G.fast sadly :(

However, well done for getting up to 73!

Yeah, the BT Wholesale checker reckoned I would get around 130-160mbps on Gfast (!!)

The line has been stable with no ES since I rebooted the modem over 4 days ago.

Yeah, the BT Wholesale checker reckoned I would get around 130-160mbps on Gfast (!!)

I would advised you - don't bother with G.fast. Your line is no chance getting it. Too far distance with your VDSL Line attenuation 15.6dB

Mine VDSL Line attenuation 11.9dB (VDSL max rate 91/27) my G.fast with Openreach G.fast modem 270/40 (winter season when it coldest spell) 210/30 (summer season when it hottest heatwave) so I guess BTw checker are correct there 130Mbps if you are lucky!
