Plusnet email to be transferred to Greenby
« on: June 09, 2025, 03:06:36 PM »

I have just received the following email

Quote
IMPORTANT UPDATE TO YOUR EMAIL CHANGES
We recently sent you an email regarding the planned transfer of your Plusnet email address to a new email provider, Greenby.
We’ve realised there’s an error in the email regarding the charges once your email transfers to Greenby.
As a valued Plusnet Broadband customer, we have arranged for the email service to be free of charge for the first 2 years. Greenby will then be in touch to inform you of any future charges after this time.

I have had their email for >20 years and have not received the "recently sent" mail they refer to.

The Greenby thing has been noted on the Plusnet forums for a few weeks now, however I haven't had any official notification from them.
I believe that those PN customers who still have web space will also have that moved elsewhere.
Your email is the first I have seen where there is any mention of an ongoing charge in the future.
I only use my PN email to receive notifications from PN about charges and offers, etc, so once they start charging extra for email, I'll just cancel the email account.
They have already withdrawn their news server, so will become the most basic of ISPs, providing connectivity service only.

If you’re an active Plusnet Broadband customer, the email service with Greenby is provided for the next 2 years free of charge. After which you’ll have the option to pay to continue using your mailbox and webspace. For everyone else, the service will remain active for 30 days after your migration, and after this will cost £15 per year. This covers all your existing mailboxes, plus any new ones you choose to create.

I used mine as a backup/recovery mail for a lot of accounts.  I can't recall all the accounts over the past 20+ years but I changed a couple such as hotmail and Microsoft.  Info about the transfer seems to be coming out in dribs and drabs.  I notice on the forums there were some saying they hadnt yet got the first notice.

Nor do I have any info about £15 per year, but I actually think that is quite a reasonable price.  Yeah I know you can pick up free gmail but for people who have had the address for years and it may be in the format of "myname.plus.com" with unlimited mail boxes.  I must also be old school as although I use IMAP on the phone or tablet, I prefer to use POP3 and manage mail on the PC.

I'd agree about it being a fair price, its about 1/12 of what it cost me to host my own e-mail because virus/spam scanning is a huge overhead these days.

As for gmail, people forget how much you are giving away with something like that which likely feeds your e-mails into its advertising platform.

Please do tell me as I've been using multiple Gmail accounts for over a decade and haven't noticed any issues with them.
Google do say they don't scan emails for advertising purposes and I have never seen any evidence to the contrary.

Re google

One thing I'd like to know is how google has mapped my ip to location within the past year.
All the geolocaters either say London or Sheffield, yet every time I search for something or anything the page says

Quote
United Kingdom
My Address
 - From your IP address
 - Update location

I've always been extremely careful about giving google my location and always use the block option and let it continue thinking Sheffield. I use duckduckgo if I think a search might be personalised.

Ive tried to think where it may have got it from, most likely GPS. It might be from using google navigator, but I havent used that in many years (way before covid) and its only recently been giving the correct location.  I got a new phone about 9m ago so perhaps I was a bit slow or lapse when setting something up.  I have a few Tile devices which I think may use google maps but say they dont share info with anyone. Ive had those for about 4-5 yrs, 2 of which are on mums things.

ETA
If I use a VPN, it shows another location. So its obtaining my location from IP.

Gmail is good but yeah if you very privacy focused, it might not be for you.

Recently I clicked an attachment in the wrong place, and it promptly placed it on my google drive, basically an icon pops up super quick when mouse is moved over it, and I ended up clicking the move to google drive icon.
