Trooli installation
« on: May 29, 2025, 11:24:43 AM »

Somewhat out of the blue, Trooli have been preparing for full fibre installation in our village in Kent. On May 21 properties in our road were leafleted by Trooli to tell us that we can now order full fibre immediately. They offer several speeds (all of them symmetrical) up to 2 Gbps. They had a promotional offer of £5 off the price of 900 Mbps, and that's the one I chose. I ordered it immediately and chose an installation date/time of June 4 at 2 pm, which was accepted. The router was couriered to me on May 27. It's a Zyxel EX5601-T0, and doesn't appear to be locked as the admin login details are provided. I won't be fiddling with it though. :)
So now it's just a few days to wait, then we'll see what happens...

What a pleasant surprise that must have been.

Yes it was. This village is one of those areas which Openreach aren't very interested in, so we're dependent on an AltNet or some form of council funding, the latter being how we got FTTC in the first place.

Well, that was a bit of a washout. The engineer turned up, ready to do the installation. After checking where I wanted the ONT he then went off to find out how the line was going to be provided. Five minutes later he very apologetically told me that they were unable to do an installation for me at this time. Apparently it would require the use of a shared electricity pole, and Trooli don't have a licence for that at present, and won't have for a long time.

So that's it. He took the router back, apologised again, and drove off. :wall:

I think that is an issue for many altnets as I was told the same thing by Wessex Internet at a recent presentation about the forthcoming installation in my village. They however are planning to dig where they cannot connect via existing poles.

I don't think digging is an option in my case, because the duct would have to cross the road to get to a connection point.

Sorry for waking up an old thread, but things have moved on. Apparently the rules about sharing utility poles have changed, and there is now very little friction in sharing a pole.

I  read in a newsletter from my ISP (IDNet) that they can now offer full fibre from a number of AltNets, including Trooli, so I put in an order to see what would happen. I ordered a 1200/1200 service at £45 a month including the router. My order was accepted, and then in fairly short order it was installed without any drama, just in time for Christmas. :)

Is that a wired test? It should be over 1000Mbps if you are on a 1200Mbps profile.

It was a wired test, but all of my wired equipment has 10/100/1000 Mbps interfaces, so for the present, the best I can get is just under 1000.
