Author Topic: FTTP - speed/latency issue when not using the provided router  (Read 303 times)

I finally managed to upgrade my steam powered rural FTTC to a shiny new FTTP 900/900 Trooli connection. With the provided DGA4135 its all fine, full speed 4-5ms latency. Lovely.
But on the my old connection I was using Openwrt on a nano pi R4s. Copied all the ppp information over, including MAC and hostuniq (which appears to be the serial number in ascii hex)
It connects fine and it works, but pings are all over the place 5ms up to several hundred with dropped packets, speeds are also all over the place and its just generally unusable.

I have tried:
Switching lan/wan eth ports
Setting the nic/pppoe to 1508/1500 mtu (the dga4135 is using 1508/1500 mtu on the pppoe nic)
Also 1492/1500
Tried a fresh opnsense install on the nano pi
Ran a tcpdump on the wan eth nic, traffic seems fine, there appears to be no ppp oddness, just the usual lcp echo/reply
Checked ethtool and it does appear to be set at 1000 Full, the nic or driver doesnt seem to like me trying to turn of auto negotiation
I have powered off the ont for a few minutes

The ONT seems to be Adtran SDX 631 10GE based on the look and the 10GE indicator light.
My hunch is its a hardware issue, possibly with the auto-negotiation between the nic and the ont.

I`m going to try some different hardware, but any ideas?

Which version of the Nano Pi R4S do you have?

Does sound like the hardware isn't up to the job of handling the new fast connection?

Its just a standard 4gb R4s, not the enterprise edition, whatever that is.

Even with no traffic other than pings its erratic.

Anyway, after much writing and swapping of sd cards, if I use a stock openwrt image and import my backup, it works ok, but if I use a image builder image with extra packages it gives me the weird behaviour. There must be something wierd in there.

Not sure why I see identical behaviour on a fresh stock opnsense install though...

Nano pi R4S variants:
1GB version
4GB version with a specific MAC address
4GB version with eeprom because of MAC issue
4GB version with 32GB EMMC aka R4SE

Do you see the same issues on Openwrt 23.05?
