BT Wholesale Checker Anomaly
« on: March 09, 2025, 08:38:22 AM »

Does anyone know how the predicted speeds are derived when using an address rather than phone number?

I have an anomaly for my address where the predicted speed is 51Mb, when I've had a stable 70Mb for a couple of years across two ISPs. If I check the addresses either side of me, then both correctly predict 70M when using the address. This is an issue as I'm looking to move again but only being offered the lower speed.

I'm aware that I should still get the same speed after moving, unless moved to a capped profile. But I'm concerned at the reduced speed guarantee. This will give any ISP an easy out from addressing any future speed drop.

I think I've seen this before where the address checker is less accurate than using the phone number, but I no longer have a Wholesale phone number.

If the data was available it used to be based upon any neighbouring lines on the same DP.
Else use what always have been rather conservative estimates based over a wider area.

Thanks, it's odd how addresses either side are correct. Guess I'll have to keep trying, although a couple of suppliers are offering a minimum guarantee of 60Mb, despite what the checker says..

Basically, the “guarantee” is a marketing con-job.  I would suspect that the “guarantee” is a movable feast based on how the line has behaved recently.  If your line has had a problem, it will have gone down.  After all, you don’t give a “guarantee” you know you may well not be able to live up to.  Mine has certainly dropped over the years.

I disagree, it's the important threshold at which as ISP can ask Openreach to investigate a fault & you can be released from your contract if not fixed. So having the MSG reduced from 65Mb to 29Mb is bit of an issue.

Best theory I've heard so far on another forum is that it's to do with moving from FTTC to SOGEA. Whereas previously I could enter my phone number to identify the exact circuit, with actual observed feeds, I can now only enter my address. So the checker is now estimating on a worst case scenario, presumably based on distance from the cab.

What's curious though is that ISPs are offering different rates. Zen, BT & Plusnet are offering an MSG around 30Mb. EE & Vodafone 65Mb. You'd think they'd all be looking at the same data?
