Adapter for both analogue and VOIP phone
« on: January 31, 2025, 06:47:17 PM »

Hi folks,

Firstly, forgive my ignorance.

I currently have FTTC (SOGEA) with digital voice.

When FTTP finally arrives I will may switch from my current supplier to a broadband only service and will likely split the voice to AAISP (only require a landline for incoming calls and PAYG outgoing).

I currently sue an analogue phone/answerphone plugged directly into the router with an adapter.

I assume that if I move the voice service to AAISP I will need an adapter to plug into the router, assuming any supplied router won't have a phone connector only Ethernet ports.

Are there any adapters that will take an analogue phone initially and then a DECT/VOIP phone or are they two systems different and will therefore need two adapters?

Basically I want to know what equipment I'll need at home to use my current landline phone with AAISP's VOIP product.

TIA

I think you're asking the wrong question as you are already on Digital Voice.

The answer to your actual question is something like a Gigaset N300IP which supports both POTS landline and digital voice (such as AAISP) at the same time, it has a LAN cable to the router for the latter plus a standard phone cable with BT plug for your phone socket.
(Having migrated carefully in stages I used that unit, but it's now spare/backup and probably for sale via eBay in due course. I now use a Gigaset N510ipPro which is digital only)

However, your "current supplier" may have a proprietary system where the router acts as a service-specific VOIP adapter. To get any useful advice you'd need to specify that.... and what current "adapter" you use - e.g. is it just a cable converter or a box of active electronics?

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I'm currently using Zen's supplied Fritz!Box which has a built in phone port. I'm using a BT analogue phone with a BT Socket Adapter to RJ11 plug to connect to the router.

I may move to a different supplier as the TruCall call blocker system and the built in answerphone doesn't work with zen's Digital voice.

A lot of alternative ISP's don't have a voice service or a direct phone port on their supplied router so will likely move the phone to AAISP. I also think that moving the voice service to a 3rd party makes it easier to switch ISP after any contracts expire (I'm more likely to change the FTTP provider if a better deal is on offer than the voice service).

So what I think I'm after is something to bridge between my current analogue BT phone and the router which I can also use with a new VOIP phone if/when I get one. This is based on an assumption that the analogue phone will use the RJ11 connector and a VOIP phone will use an Ethernet connector.

Sorry if not clear.

There are a few Analog Phone Adapters (ATAs) available which offer 2 standard telephone interfaces which will allow connection of your analogue phone and a standard DECT base station to work with a VoIP supplier. I have previously used a variation of this adapter for this very purpose, but they are generally not plug-and-play requiring some configuration for the UK telephone standards which can be a little daunting. Also depending on your router, they may not play nicely with some VoIP providers due to NAT issues (dropped calls). I find a router with built-in SIP support to be the most reliable (avoids NAT) and currently use a Firebrick from AAISP which my OBi ATA (long discontinued) and Gigaset N300IP connect to directly. I have VoIP services from both AAISP and Sipgate.

So Vic0239 is saying pretty much the same as me, i.e. Gigaset N300ip does what you want - probably....

I've just switched away from my N300ip as the BT landline finally went totally dead.
Not sure if I'm allowed to say this on here but it's packaged up with a Gigaset R630h Pro handset ready for sale on eBay when I can be bothered to get round to it. Both fully reset. Happy to consider a private sale at a mutually agreeable price.

Note that the N300ip will happily register and support most GAP-compatible DECT handsets, indeed I used mine with several of different brands initially, but you really need Gigaset handsets for full functionality, especially if you want to use multiple numbers at different phone services. Though the web control interface to the N300 does everything you need to set it up from a PC.
I've only used AAISP for VOIP and BT retail was my POTS landline supplier. I have two AAISP numbers and did have one BT one until recently.

Thank you.

I'll leave the hardware for now as Openreach are still installing the terminals on the poles in the street so will be a while before FTTP is available.

All good food for thought though.

Have you had any problems with the N300?  I'm randomly getting "failed to register" problems with AAISP, but the SIPGate accounts never have the same issue.  I even tried disabling everything except AAISP but it still happened.

It usually happens several times in the same week then will be stable for weeks, its really odd.

I'm no longer using the N300ip but I used to get something like that, though it wasn't (usually) real, in that the web interface showed non-registration but everything worked and navigating round the menus and back to the status page showed all OK. So I've assumed it's just a firmware problem not updating the display until you bumbled around a bit.

Unfortunately mine does show "registration failed" in the WebUI.

I don't think... you will get the TruCall call blocker system working with any Voip service... as far I can determine this supports POTS line only , no Digital voice https://www.truecall.co.uk/category-s/128.htm question 2.

My Fritz!Box 7590 is setup to use AAISP Voip as I have changed from the Yealink W70B phone due to lack of recording on this system (A&A will email the message to you).
Fritz!Box now controls all incoming call + recording if we don't answer, and sends message to my Mobile phone as well (If i'm out of the house) via Fritz app.

Was a bit of a faff setting it up as some of the settings on A&A site don't work!  :wall::-X and so far no drop outs! :fingers:

I also bought the AVM FRITZ!Fon C6 × 3 as they support encrypted Dect setting in the Fritz!Box. You can use ordinary Dect phones but with setting turned off.

@parkdale

You know there's FritzFon app that installs on your smartphone and acts to extend your landline? Only within your home network, though.
