Wessex Internet - FTTP at last.
« on: February 20, 2026, 08:11:19 AM »

I've finally been brought into the 21st century with Wessex Internet installing FTTP at my house a few days ago. They have only just gone live in my village after they started their build here last June. They aren't cheap - I've gone for their 250/125 service which is £42.50 per month on an 18 month contract, but if you want FTTP here it's them or nothing. Their fastest offering is 900/450 but that's a hefty £79 per month and I can't justify that. In theory they have an open network but no other ISPs are available with them at present.
It was a two stage installation with their "Garden Team" doing the groundwork last week, which has been done very nicely but as they mostly only had my gravel drive to go across that did make it easy to cover their tracks. On the inside I have a Nokia XS-240X-A which is a XGS-PON (10Gb) device paired with a Nokia WiFi Beacon G6 router (2.5Gb, AX6000). I'm not using the WiFi on that at present as I have my own mesh system and also no devices that would benefit from AX6000 speeds. The router is pretty tied down via it's web interface but you can do a bit more via the Nokia app, and by a bit more I mean simple things like IP address reservations!
Speed test below - not sure why it says Cogent Communications as other tests do identify it as Wessex Internet. It's also IPv4 only which is a bit sad but doesn't seem to be an actual issue in practice.

They may be renting IPv4 blocks from Cogent? That's a clever move that to avoid potential GeoIP issues, or buying entire ranges. IP's are not cheap!

Having just done a bit more research it looks like that is exactly what they are doing.  :)

149.107.0.0/19

Thanks kitz. It's taken long enough as we nearly got Gigaclear FTTP about 10 years ago but they pulled out just before the build stage when the local council awarded Openreach one of the early BDUK FTTC contracts. I must admit that at the time I wasn't so bothered as FTTC bandwidth was more than adequate back then. Not so much the case now of course.
