Drop or no Drop? - Openreach and Cityfibre
« on: October 16, 2024, 10:12:14 AM »

My current FTTP setup was installed by OpenReach just over two years ago. The engineer did a fantastic job with the installation of the new fibre drop, and in particular the cabling to the CSP and ONT which involves some fairly long runs. I am very pleased with this physical installation and it performs faultlessly.

At the end of the second year my ISP, Sky (who I had originally selected for their bundled VOIP land-line) put up my monthly bill by a large amount.

I've put in an order with Vodafone this week which offers the same level of service provision and is less than half the cost per month.

All good so far, but my issue is this:

I have received a message from Vodafone that they are sending a CityFibre engineer at the end of this month to perform an installation.

Given that Vodafone can use both OpenReach and CityFibre as physical providers, this surprised me since I already have OpenReach infrastructure at my property. Why not just use that?

I'm concerned that CityFibre will want to fit a whole new drop, CSP and ONT alongside the OpenReach install. This would be unacceptable.

What do you all think is the likely outcome here?

@temporarychicken  If you want to continue using your existing Openreach FTTP connection you have to order from a supplier that uses Openreach. If Vodafone won't do that, (have you asked?) then you will have to find another supplier.

It will be its own set of cable and ONT.  It will also give you much faster upload speeds.

If you not happy with this trade off lower price and faster upload for duplicated setup, then I agree with RealAleMadrid, you will need to pick another ISP that either exclusively uses Openreach or lets you pick Openreach as the supplier.

Vodafone quoted you prices using Cityfibres network. They default to CF where both networks are available as it is cheaper for them and you.

They will need to install another drop cable, CSP & ONT.
Cityfibre are legally not allowed to touch Openreachs kit apart from poles and ducting.

As above if your don't want this then you need to pick a provider who will use Openreachs network, but it will likely be more expensive than Cityfibres with slower upload.

Thanks for the answers, I guess it is what it is!

I'll allow the new Cityfibre drop, CSP, and ONT.

For a century the property had a single twisted pair copper dropwire.

And by next month it'll have two separate fibre drops. That's progress eh?

Regarding Vodafone:
As a Vodafone FTTP service user on a 200/28Gb package I constantly receive upgrade offers on a 2 weekly basis to upgrade to 900Gb service at a very modest price increase, I did attempt to take up the offer a few months ago, was advised after 2 weeks that this could not be provided but could not advise why, the order just died a death with no further communication!

My understanding is that the 900Gb VF service is only provided via CityFibre.
CityFibre have never had and currently have no immediate plans to offer service at my location, N.Ireland, however still receive the same offer from VF as do many other subscribers I know in N.I..

To put it kindly, VF departments would appear to lack coordination :)

Interesting as I keep getting this offer from Vodafone as well but as I'm on their 500 service which is more than enough Ive not asked but since Cityfibre is not here either I'm guessing this is just rubbish, and probably against the rules as well since it could not be provided.

Vodafone definitely do a 900Mb package on Openreach also.
910Mb down and 105Mb up.

Cityfibre packages are the same 900Mb upstream as downstream.

Yes, VF are certainly persistant with their marketing offers.
I likely could upgrade to their 500Mb service I would think under OR provision for a few quid per month but of course that would trigger a new 2 year contract, something I don't wish to do even though currently happy with the service.
Would rather keep my existing end of contract date and options open :)

@j0hn:
Interesting regarding OR 910Mb service provision.
VF certainly could not/would not fulfill my upgrade to 900Mb service order here in N.I., initially accepted the application but cancelled after 2 weeks, despite many requests on chat line and phone they could not offer any explanation on the cancellation, I assumed it was due to lack of CityFibre service in my area.

@temporarychicken:
Apologies for somewhat hijacking your thread, hopefully as a potential VF user the discussion will be of interest.

Probably local Vodafone capacity issues affecting your exchange of maybe even an all of N.I

Could well be the case, have never been able to extract any definitive answer from VF as to why the order could not be fulfilled while constantly re-offering me the same package by marketing e-mail's. ???

I'd love to be able to get City Fibre alongside Openreach, great selling point for the property if you have not one but two options for true fibre broadband.

I just want symmetrical so that I will never have to worry about maxing out the upload as nothing at the other end ever will.

The funny thing is, that due to the PIA agreements, I'll end up with 2 installations whilst you are still waiting for your first.

Hardly fair overall but let's hope they get to your address soon.

My old FTTC had got so crap by the time they finally enabled FTTP in my road, I had gone from 50+ Meg on ADSL to barely scraping 30. This was probably down to contention and noise issues.

I literally ordered the FTTP the first day it became available! The hundred year-old twisted copper dropwire had done it's service and earned quite a few ISPs some good money over the years, but it's time was finally up.
