Documentation on Current OR/BT FTTP Modem and Phone Provision
« on: October 15, 2024, 08:18:49 AM »

Hi,

I'm looking for any documentation on the sort of gear that would currently be installed by OR for FTTP, and in particular telephone provision if any.

The context is that a recent community resilience conference, there was a presentation on PSTN shutdown and what that would mean for emergency communications, for example during extended power cut. The documentation in the presentation stated that FTTP installations will as a matter of course include battery backup, to allow around 8 hour operation for telephone calls only.

That is what I'm trying to sanity check. Is battery backup provided as standard? Or only to vulnerable households, or not at all?

Technically how does it provide phone calls only? There was reference to plugging a telephone into the modem, but again is that still the case? I recall that when we thought Community Fibre might b on the cards, LR were about to discontinue the phone socket on the ONT. But that was back in 2019 or so, and at that time most ISPs recommended keeping a coppr line if you wanted a phone.

The guy giving the presentation asked to be updated if anyone had new information or corrections.

Thanks,
,

All the info I've seen refers to a phone socket on the router, or "Home Hub" in BT speak, rather than the modem/ont.

Yes, I believe that is currently the case, so both the ONT and router will require power backup if the user needs to maintain their phone service during a power outage.

Interestingly we had a planned power outage in part of my village a couple of months ago for pole transformer replacements, and even though my house retained power I still lost my FTTC service after about 90 minutes of the outage starting due I assume to the cabinet batteries running out.

@aesmith The Voip phone service supplied via the Openreach ONT was never widely used and withdrawn for new customers since 2020, however it is still in use presumably by a few early adopters. To be completely discontinued soon .......

Its such a shame, this was by far the more practical way to move over people who aren't technically savvy or even need the Internet.
