Finally! FTTP is available (sort-of)
« on: September 26, 2024, 09:23:20 AM »

My address was planned for FTTP over two years ago but due to complications it never happened. I made contact with Clive's team and was told that the program was called 'retro new sites', where they roll out FTTP to properties that are easy to connect. 95% of the estate was connected, but unfortunately my address and a handful of others were missed. I was told a couple of different reasons by the complaints team - a lack of splitter nodes and some of the underground ducting being damaged so they are unable to get the fibre through.

fast-forward two years and nothing has changed with Openreach. But, Virgin media just knocked on my door. They have rolled out in the area (despite not doing any works). They seem to be using the Openreach ducting.

My neighbour ordered the week before me so is a little further ahead. While they were installing his fibre I had a peek. Interestingly, they did the initial install - putting a box on his house, opening these manholes but he was told there is a delay. I wonder if they came across the same collapsed duct that Openreach found?

The location of this manhole is marked by the green x at the bottom of the image. They also had one open marked at the top X
The row of properties to the right of the road between the two x's don't have FTTP availability, but the properties on the left side of the road do.

I noticed there is a yellow tag that says UPP corporation - I knew they were rolling out in Newark this summer, but didn't realise they had installed already.

Now I'm wondering if I should hold off and possibly wait for the UPP service to go live  :-\

I've just learnt that UPP is VM. It seems they were bought out

You can read the planned streetworks here:

Yes if they come across the same collapsed duct then it's going to be interesting, would you accept a telegraph pole?  ;)

I've been reading a little about Virgin using XGS-PON. I understand they use the openreach ducting etc. but do they also use the splitter nodes? I was originally told by the openreach complaints team that they didn't have the capacity on the splitters for my street. But if VM are using the same infrastructure this can't be true?

Locally VM have updated all cabinets, but we are still being fed by coaxial at present just for the landline.

@nick9one1  Virgin are only sharing the Openreach physical ducts etc but the Virgin fibre is on their own network not Openreach so they are not using the Openreach splitters.

Thanks. I understand this now. The engineer that installed it yesterday said that the UPP network was backed by Russian investors. After what happened in Ukraine, Virgin was able to buy/take it over.
