Router wont connect to new Openreach ONT connection.
« on: October 29, 2024, 07:31:39 PM »

Had FTTP installed today and the router won't connect to the LAN on the ONT.  I am using OPenwrt on an old router and get a connection error. The correct lights are on the ONT.   Router reports connection error on the WAN port  and in the system log it suggests a PADO time out but I can see that on that interface there is TX of some bytes (and Pks) but none RX(or packets)
System log:
Tue Oct 29 19:27:01 2024 daemon.notice netifd: Interface 'WAn' is setting up now
Tue Oct 29 19:27:01 2024 daemon.info pppd[15881]: Plugin pppoe.so loaded.
Tue Oct 29 19:27:01 2024 daemon.info pppd[15881]: PPPoE plugin from pppd 2.4.9
Tue Oct 29 19:27:01 2024 daemon.notice pppd[15881]: pppd 2.4.9 started by root, uid 0
Tue Oct 29 19:27:16 2024 daemon.warn pppd[15881]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Tue Oct 29 19:27:17 2024 daemon.err pppd[15881]: Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery
Tue Oct 29 19:27:17 2024 daemon.info pppd[15881]: Exit.

Has anyone had anything simular and any ideas?  I was about to buy a new router but plugged into windows PC and still coiuld not connect.

I am only speculating based on posts I have read in different places, I was going to say I suspect it is potentially a provisioning issue.

However to be clearer on the LAN issue, is the LAN failing to establish a link to the ONT?  If there is no working ethernet link then there will also be no working internet connection.  I mean LAN not WAN, so is no confusion.

That would be my thought too, this is something that will need chasing up with the ISP.

Thanks Chrysalis and Alex, I have emailed the ISP to ask them to check.  I don't think I can make a LAN connection to the ONT but the LAN light is a solid green. I will try to see if I can get any more info out the router later today if they have not fixed it.

I noticed that my badly flashed router has a new random WAN address on each reboot and so was wondeing if the OINT does not like this. I don't know the orginal MAC address so I'm not sure how I'll fix this if it is an issue.

Which router, I've seen this on 21.02 SDK devices, like the Mercusys MR90x, GL-iNet Beryl AX and Brume 2.
I'm currently running SNAPSHOT and do not see this issue.

If LAN light is green, looks like you are connected to the ONT.  I would expect it to flash when there is activity, but there wont be much activity without the internet connection active.  So yeah as Alex said, chase up with ISP.

Also have basics been checked, as you've changed from a modem/router to a router only using PPoE.
Are you using your full email address not just your user name?
Are you with the same ISP?
What lights are showing for the optical side of the unit?
Did your ISP send your there own router?
Has the ONT been restarted at all? The old classic!

It's just a few thoughts, of a few boxes that hopefully you've already ticked.  :fingers:

Restarted everything. Router is still connected to ppoe via vsdl from old supplier line. New supplier is via fttp on the wan port. I have ceased the cancellation on the old line till new one works. DIY router. Interestingly the supplier says the log in does not reach the radius server so not even rejected for wrong password.

Feedback from openreach via new supplier is to use another router so I have ordered one to try but won't be able to try that till next week.

If you have a spare PC maybe test with pfsense?

They're talking utter BS, of course they wont get RADIUS errors if the virtual circuit hasn't been setup to connect from the ONT to your ISP.

You already checked with a PC which didn't work either, that rules out the router as the problem.  Although to be fair, the HH5A could be a huge bottleneck if you got anything but the slowest speed package.

The use another router feels like the classic "fob off" agree with Alex.

I had similar when I first hooked up to FTTP, but luckily AAISP checked their side instantly, and within minutes after reporting it I was online.

Its either the ISP, or the virtual routing side as Alex mentioned, the PC test was effectively ruling out the router.  If both of these things have been checked, and they insist its the router, they probably need to work with you on it.  However they may not have checked and just assumed its the router.

This^^^

Tell the provider you have tried a few different routers so they don't fob you off.
This looks like something beyond your home if you have entered the PPP settings as the provider requires.
