Unable to post in FTTP Rollout Forum
« on: September 11, 2024, 01:46:36 PM »

Why I try to post it says there's a database error, try again. If I try again it says it's already been posted.

Did your post contain any non-ASCII characters (probably a pound sign). If so, refresh your screen and repost without the offending character(s).

Thanks, no non-ASCII characters. It did have inverted commas but replacing them with stars doesn't fix it.

I guess you may need to reboot. At least it's worth trying. Sorry about this annoying issue.

Apologies for this annoying issue.  I could type a lot about this. I will save you the headache. There is more info in other threads.
Ive been trying for an unbelievable 3 hours to respond to your post.  This particular failure is not due to technical reasons.

I'm best just trying to leave it with Erics explanation that its a collation problem with the extended ASCII charset. Standard inverted commas  (U+0022) should be fine. The pound and euro are the most common culprits .  I have also been caught out with the copyright c.

If you do get an error, make sure you move away from the errored post.   Dont try typing again a message in the same "post reply" screen .  eg dont use the back key, then delete the text and typing a new message in the same window.    session cookies remember it and throw the same error.

Once again sorry about this, I am aware but just tight now I do not have the required resources to fix it.

Thanks. It's a bit bizarre that I just can't post in that specific section. Even a completely new window opens this morning.

I've certainly seen problems with inverted commas myself, although that was a copy/paste from a web page so likely had been copied as UTF.

I've not had the problem with session cookies, but I do usually have to reload the page to edit the post before trying again.

As you say its strange that it should be a specific section.

Are you unable to make a new post in that section, or are you trying to reply to an existing thread.
From the error report I see, there is a problem with one of the chars in the main body of the post.  I think it says you are trying to create a new thread but I'm not sure and it could be that 'new post' is a reply

Below is some of the data from the error message that was generated when you tried to post.

Code: [Select]

Incorrect string value: '\x92s loc...' for column 'body'

I've been able to create a new thread in that section, are you able to reply to that thread?

Thanks, yes it was a new thread. Is that character in the log (x92s) a hex value (92) or decimal 92 or something else. I can't see anything funny in the text. In case it's relevant it previews OK.

Previews are fine, its when trying to insert into the database that the problem rears its head.

Is that character in the log (x92s) a hex value (92) or decimal 92 or something else.

I'm not sure.  The database table doesnt recognise the non ASCII chars, so it doesnt always give much of a clue.
Ive gone through my keyboard and the only key it doesnt like is the pound key.

I suppose it could be
Code: [Select]
DEC OCT HEX BIN Symbol HTML Number HTML Name Description
146 222 92 10010010 x ’ ’ Right single quotation mark

https://www.ascii-code.com/CP1252/146

Ive replaced the symbol with x

Trying to use that particular char generates the same error

Code: [Select]
Database Error: Incorrect string value: '\x92 with...' for column 'body' at row 1
Theres a utf8 mismatch somewhere between the forum software and the database.   Preview works fine as the software is up to date and the most recent.  Problem is the database I think got transferred over as latin and although they have tried to update it to utf8 something broke.
This has been such a headache.

Right I think what must be happening is that although my keyboard only has the one double nverted comma key, it must in some way get added as left and right variants, one of which his non-ASCII.

Test with "inverted commas"

Maybe only a new post is affected, not replies.
