Author Topic: After a landline port, how long do I have to wait till I can order SoGEA/FTTP?  (Read 2921 times)

Hello everyone

I am in a situation where I have a landline number that I would like to keep. It is owned by BT and I would like to port it to A&A before the inevitable move to Digital Voice which I don't even want to consider how I would then get that ported.

I am thinking of doing the port this week so can anyone advise what would be the best plan for having as limited downtime as possible between the port out and being able to get another service e.g. SoGEA or FTTP installed? Both are available.

Is it simply safer to wait till A&A have fully ported over or should I submit an order for SoGEA/FTTP the same day I request the number port? Obviously the former means much more downtime but if it means less hassle and a guarantee in the port I am fine with that.

I would wait for the number to be ported to AAISP first, then when its up and running do the order, otherwise I think you have the risk of some accident happening that loses the number.

If you do it the other way round and swap to SOGEA first you have 30 days for A&A to get your number ported to their VOIP service. In practice they get it done in a few days.
Many of the Plusnet customers have done it this way. Much will depend on which you can do without for a few days.

Also bear in mind with BT that porting your number will result in your broadband being ceased at the same time. They don't seem to have grasped the concept of telephony and broadband being separate services.

It depends on how important it is to you to have minimal downtime AND retain the number. Both were for me.
My solution was to order a new FTTC/SOGEA line (no FTTP here) with a new master socket in a better location, with PlusNet.
Once that was up and running I cancelled my old ADSL (NOT the phone) asked A&A to port the landline number to them, it took a few days.

The port terminated my old BT line, though it still has dial tone and a different number allocated (according to 17070).
It was all somewhat easier for me as I had separate contracts, both on "out of contract, minimal notice" terms with Plusnet (ADSL) and BT (POTS).
Both PN and BT actually refunded me overpayments back to the date of termination/transfer.

The extra cost of installing a new line was soon recovered by the monthly savings.

Also you don't actually say who your landline is contracted with (BT may "own" it but is it BT retail you pay?) and whether it has broadband over/associated with it and who supplies that?
