Forum Posts not working as intended.
« on: July 10, 2024, 02:33:09 PM »

During the server migration the character set got changed from UTF8 to Latin.  This has had a disastrous effect on some of the characters when making posts.
Attempting to use these characters will cause the post to fail.  Characters that Im aware of so far are:

  • The pound sign
  • One of the apostrophe type symbols.

Any previous posts with these symbols with show up as an unusual character.
If you try to make a post that contains these characters, then the post will fail to save.

Please bear with me whilst I try to find a solution.  Unfortunately it's not a simple case of changing the character set back and there are some things I need to do first so that we dont lose data.

Oh god.... that's a lot more complex. I think I may have a PHP script somewhere that can scan for characters but normally I did it with the SQL file.

When trying to read up I cant just change it on the table and all rows also have to be changed.  I also need to sort out the language packs used by any mods.   Tapatalk isnt uninstalling and I will need to do that manually. Plus one more mod.   In the meantime Im still working my way through something else that was causing the smf temp table to crash.
Unfort Im slow and have the shakes real bad today and not managed to do anything productive.  I could also do with not sitting at the desk as I have a pressure sore.  I have to have dressing changes done by the district nurses who would have an absolute fit if they knew how much time I was spending sat on a desk chair even though I have one of the special cushions.

Wow, that seems incredibly dumb.  Why would UTF8 not be the default these days?

Had a quick look at my own databases and they do seem to have defaulted to utf8_unicode_ci, so this must be something to do with how the migration was done.

I do see at least one post from someone else using CPanel where it too was switching to latin when exporting the database.  But they noticed in time to export again with utf8 specifically defined so no help there.

The server (if installed ages ago) can be set to latin as the default from before.
I am just surprised the tables and sql didnt specify the character set when importing as its normally in the SQL file.

Well I'm not sure what was breaking the post I just made in News.  I removed all ' and " which eventually allowed it to go through, but it let me put them back in again AFTER I'd made the initial post, so no idea what was tripping it up.
