Zyxel VMG8924-B10A two questions.
« on: April 03, 2024, 01:08:05 PM »

Two q's if anyone here can help...

1.   I recently got an 8924-B10A and have noticed that it does not have two USB ports. The sockets are not present on the pcb and the case has no cut outs for them. I think this originally was a Plusnet router. Not found any thread that mentions this variation. Not a big problem as I am not likely to use them, just a 'nice to know'.

2. In use a problem has become apparent, the connection from my pc to the router stops working, either wireless or ethernet after a while however I can still telnet in and see that the adsl link is still running as also shown by the leds on the front. Tried a minimum config turning off as much as possible, all logs, email alerts etc but no change. Currently on the johnson v28 FW can try an older level. Last resort will be  heat treating the pcb for surface mount solder defects.  Any ideas ?

regards

I got two of these, one for modem and other as spare. I have only ever used them as modems tbh, never tried wifi - both have two USB ports and I have never seen the issue you describe - both have always been 100% reliable for years.  Sorry I know its not very helpful, sounds like you either have a hardware issue or maybe if your example is a different model is has a compatibility issue with firmware?

Confusingly Zyxel have made two versions of these with the same model number and I suspect you have the newer version.
Old and then new versions below.

Looks like the WAN port is missing too.
Check the heatsink, I had a VMG8924 where the solder had failed on one of the pin holding the heatsink down.

LAN4 doubles as WAN, curiouser and.....Tks for the solder tip. Trying FW 15 before I resort to the heat option.

Very odd - looks like a cut down version of the standard old version VMG8924-B10A which has two USB and a separate WAN port. ???
