Zyxel hide firmware updates??
« on: February 01, 2024, 12:18:22 PM »

Hi,

Need a new simple modem pass-through to go with a ASUS RTAX56U. Zyxel VMG1312-T20B seems to fit the bill at the price, however can't find it's firmware page anywhere?  Does it 'auto-fetch' on power up or something?  Are they even bothering supporting VMG1312s any more?  Thanks

Personally I'd avoid Zyxel devices that have a 'T' as the first letter of their suffix as that indicates a Mediatek chipset rather than Broadcom. Broadcom based models have a 'B' in their suffix = eg VMG1312-B10A. A lot of their Broadcom based devices are out of support now but I'm not sure how much that really matters if you are using in modem only mode.

Ah, ironically I'm currently using a VMG1312-B10A but presumed it needed updating !?

If it were me I'd happily continue using that as it's a really good VDSL modem.

That's the best performing bridge modem I ever used on VDSL2.
Nothing synced higher with so few errors.

It's old and no longer updated and only has 100Mb ports, but none of that is an issue in bridge mode and on an xDSL service that can't go above 100Mb/s.

I would stick with what you have.

Firmware updates are more important when used as a router where the device is exposed to the Internet so any software bug could leave it open to exploits.

When its used as a bridge modem its only relevant if there is a modem problem impacting sync, which as DSL is unlikely to get much development now most countries are moving to fibre, its unlikely the modem firmware is getting much if any work on it.

Its already had years of development that has gotten it to such a well optimised stable modem.
