Talking to John now. A mother board died.

It should all be back up now.

He thought it more important to crack on with the solution than answer hundreds of phone calls!

Yes perhaps, but no service for some for some 23 hrs might have been worth a post on here if nothing else   And I guess all name servers on one box is a bit of a worry.

Try doing a reverse IP lookup to see how many COMMERCIAL sites are on that server. We are just a very small non-profitable part of his business.

I think your criticism is totally unjustified!

Just a reminder regarding incoming emails. How long they take to arrive is totally dependant on the sending servers which will should have been retrying at increasingly longer intervals. As it's been less than a day none should have been lost.

I totally agree, but I concur that being able to post a service status message some where may have been a good idea so that customers knew the issue was in hand and being dealt with.  A 2 min post to one of the Social Media platforms could have saved unnecessary stress.

I have a tablet I use at work, it had issues collecting emails at morning tea break, I thought there might have been an issue somewhere but totally forgot about it, when I got home and found I had a load of emails I then remembered.

Glad it's all fixed now, and I hope some redundancy is being considered to remove the possibility of this happening again, obviously some people rely on the service.

I guess all name servers on one box is a bit of a worry.

This is why I've always had my DNS hosted independently, currently on Cloudflare.

DNS really should be hosted somewhere with redundancy IMO, so even if my host craps itself, I can alter the DNS to point to a locally hosted placeholder if needed.  I used to have my backup MX record for example point to my home connection so e-mails could be held and delivered to the main MX once its back up, should there be issues, such as if needing to change hosts.

I'm not sure if I'd been affected that I would have found a social media post unless we'd been told where to look beforehand, but I agree John should consider setting up something away from his servers in case of future events.

Mine came back up about 8.10pm last night, I did wonder if something had gone up in smoke and he was very busy fixing it.
I still have my old ADSL2 line for back up and once I changed over the email out going server I was able to send emails again.
