Arlo base station and router
« on: January 05, 2024, 07:10:42 PM »

Hello

I'm hoping the wonderful Kitz community will offer some advice:

Arlo base station (used to manage Arlo cameras) uses the same WiFi channel as the router. So, if the router changes channels, so does the base station.

This behaviour is apparently inherited from when Arlo was owned by Netgear, so I presume there must be some 'networking' reason for the base station to display this kind of behaviour.

The question: is there scientific evidence to support the above behaviour. If so, what is it for: does the base station use the signal from the router to strengthen its signal? (Kind of like repeater?)

It's probably a limitation of the wireless chip inside.
Many chips can only broadcast on the same channel that they are receiving on.

Phones that are able to use a WiFi hotspot while connected to WiFi at the same time (many phones just can't do this) have the same limitation. The hotspot channel is stuck to whatever WiFi channel the phone is currently connected to.

Also similar to how firesticks create their own wi-fi direct channel for the remotes on the same channel the stick is connected to (it's a hidden channel only seen during a scan).
