Best VDSL router
« on: November 29, 2023, 09:07:30 PM »

The WiFi performance of my old BTHub6 was lacking hence I was looking for a straight upgrade. After I've replaced it with a TP Link Archer VR2800 things have slightly improved but still not to what I was hoping for. My question is, would a DrayTek Vigor 2862ac make any improvements or perhaps should I look into replacing the WiFi router with a Netgear R7800 or a Zyxel NWA1123-AC HD and keep the SH as modem only?

My current VDSL stats are as follows:
DSL Up Time: 0 days 5 hours 49 minutes
DSL Modulation Type: VDSL2
Annex Type: Annex A/L
Upstream Downstream
Current Rate (kbps) 9997 34999
Max Rate (kbps) 12413 46351
SNR Margin (dB) 7.1 10.3
Line Attenuation (dB) 30.4 15.7
Errors (pkts) 0 0

Using a good VDSL router and a separate good ethernet router in Access Point mode, or an actual dedicated WiFi Access Point will IMO always be better than DSL combined routers/gateways.

Combined gateways always seem to fall short on something and DSL ones in particular it can be tricky to find which models have good modems AND good WiFi.

Thanks. Would you think that using the BTHub6 or perhaps the HG612 3B would give better DSL results then? BTW, the BT FTTC Cabinet is Huawei based.

To be fair your connection seems to be stellar already, so the modem may make very little or no difference on such a clean/short line.

I'm totally blind and read the stats wrong.

@Alex Atkin Actuallly it's not that good because it's banded at 35Mbps. Should be getting 40Mbps, probably a fair bit more if it was on an 80/20 service.

Argh I was misreading it, was thrown by it being banded and not counting the number of digits lol.

I'm on Fibre 1, so I think I'm capped at 40?

You should be, but the DLM has capped your line at 35Mb/s.

This usually due to high errors or multiple resyncs in a short time period.

I'm guessing this might be down to just replacing the router, I don't know. I'll leave the vr2800 for a few more days and then I'll put the old HH6 back to see if it resyncs higher.

VR2800 is Broadcom last time I checked, HH6 is Lantiq, do you know if your FTTC Cab is Broadcom or Infineon?

The BT HH6 (aka BT Smart Hub) came in an A and a B variant. The A variant was FTTC only and had a Lantiq chipset.
It was replaced with the B variant which was both FTTC/P compatible and had a Broadcom 63167 and was by far the most abundant of the 2.

Chances are if it's a BT Smart Hub 1 (HH6) it's more than likely Broadcom unless it was an early model.

Huawei cabinet, so Broadcom isn't it?  Although if having a matching modem makes a difference has always seemed to vary from line to line.

The cabinet is Huawaei, the router is Type B. I'm inclined to keep the VR2800 (as you say, it's BCom based) due to the Open VPN server and all-in-one. Less power consumption and not sure if any improvements can be further made if I'll go with dedicated modem + router + AP. It's been two days and there aren't much changes in the line. Not a VDSL expert but I understand that I can't tweak the VDSL line in the same way that I could with ADSL+?

That's odd cause I don't see errors (at least not reported in the poor interface status from the HH6), and been careful not to upset the router, the previous uptime was months+. Don't think that I'll solve anything if i rang BT, do I?

I don't think phoning will help. It's hard enough to find anyone who knows what you're talking about re: the DLM.

The banding can be seen in this line of your stats

Quote
Current Rate (kbps) 9997 34999

The 34999 should be 39999. The fact it's such a rounded number (999) and the SNR Margin is way above 6dB tells us the line is capped (banded) at 35Mb. It will sync at exactly that number every time.
The DLM might completely remove the banding taking you to 39999 or it might remove it in stages, taking you to 37999 for example.

Do you know when the sync speed dropped from 39999 to 34999?
