So what does and doesn't work on BT Digital Voice?
« on: August 31, 2023, 08:28:48 AM »

After reading this: https://community.bt.com/t5/Home-phone-including-Digital/Since-switching-to-BT-Voice-I-am-not-receiving-text-messages-on/td-p/2311307

then this: https://community.bt.com/t5/Archive-Staging/SMS-not-working-after-change-over-to-Digital-Voice/td-p/2169431

Most notably: "Unfortunately, the text service doesn't work with Digital Voice" on thread 1 and "It does support inbound texts and they are converted into a voice message" on thread 2.

I'm very confused as to what works and doesn't work on BT Digital Voice.

This seems to be a common thing, AAISP VoIP for example:

  • 07 (mobile) numbers that we issue can receive text messages, and can be sent on to you by email, http or to your SIP2SIM device.
  • 01 and 02 numbers have limited support for SMS. Only a few of our 01 and 02 numbers can receive texts properly, instead a call will be made to the number and read out by BTs automated system. Contact us if you are specifically looking for a uk landline number which can receive SMS.
  • 03 and 05 numbers are unable to receive SMS.

I discovered yesterday that one of my friends who lives about 200 yards away was converted to digital voice a few days ago.
They have a "fibre to cabinet" BT phone and broadband, we are on a BT phone line with ADSL from the exchange provided by PlusNet.
We have had no information about digital voice, not were we expecting any, also there is no schedule for FTTP in our area.
Can I expect to be left alone for now on our "wet string" services?

I asked him what BT had installed and he said "nothing" the phone just plugs into the router. Surely there has to be some sort of converter or is it built in to newer BT routers?
He also noted that now his answering machine no longer works nor does his old-school unpowered backup wired phone.
And of course in a power cut he has no phone service!

This all sounds a bit depressing.

The BT Smart Hub2 has both a built in DECT base station for their DV phones and a phone socket with built in ATA for corded phones. They also supply a DV adapter which is simply a portable Phone socket that connects to the hub via DECT and can be plugged into any convenient mains socket.

Outbound text is not supported, inbound text is converted to speech.
