Zzoomm have just launched in my area, and I'm likely to order it as I could do with the upload boost from my Openreach based line.

I've dropped a query into them and waiting for a response, but does anyone here know if Zzoomm offer a public IP, or do they utilise CG-NAT? This would be the 2GB residential package.

I can see Static IP is offered on their business package, but no mention on Residential. I don't necessarily need a full static IP, but a public IP is a must.

Good question, all I can find is mention of being able to add-on the static IP for £10/month.

Having asked the question on some of the user groups on Facebook, they've confirmed CG-NAT is not in use.

I will state - I don't know what Zzoomm's plans are.

However, if you don't already have a massive stock of public IP space, of which most AltNets don't/won't - they'll probably all go CGNAT at some point. And for 95% of users, CGNAT will work fine. If you aren't running servers off your own connection, and frankly, if you are a residential user, why are you running services off your residential connection - you don't need a Public IP.

However, AAISP's L2TP service is excellent if you need a solution (If any ISP does not offer any such Public/Static IP service)

I see a fair few over on Linus Tech Tips wanting friends to connect to their Minecraft server/session.  So while its less common for gaming these days (frustratingly, as it means multiplayers games are retired and can never be played again if they are server based and lose popularity), it is something residential users still do.  Also people wanting to VPN into their network without relying on a third-party, sharing their Plex server, etc.

I get its not common, but its not something people never do either.

But yes, I have to admit I agree. I connect to lots of things at home - but I use an ISP that guarantees that so I'm not concerned The irtony is also I need IPv4 because I'm not always on an IPv6 network when out and about.

I also get the feeling some ISPs particularly in the US aren't allocating static IPv6 subnets to each customer, which is utterly dumb.

Then there's my friend on AT&T in the US where the engineer disabled IPv6 shortly after he was upgraded to it, as their IPv6 networking is plain broken.

So even if you have IPv6 it seems problematic due to how some ISPs and services are allocating it.  For example I had far more problems accessing Flickr over IPv6 than IPv4 as I don't think all their servers are dual-stack.  So if a server (possibly cluster?) is having issues, it has more impact due to less servers available to fall back on.

Even though I'm mostly not using IPv6, it boggles my mind why the whole Internet isn't dual stack by now.  If it was, I likely wouldn't have the issues which caused me to disable it.
