Adding a switch

(1/1)

hushcoden:
My current configuration is modem <-> firewall (OPNsense) <-> AP and I need a couple more ports for additional devices (the 4-port switch integrated in the AP isn't enough)

Very basic (maybe dumb) question: what's the best position for adding an Ethernet switch ?  :baby:

1) modem <-> firewall (OPNsense) <-> switch <-> AP

2) modem <-> firewall (OPNsense) <-> AP <-> switch

Does it make any difference at all?

Tia.

HPsauce:
No difference, unless it's slower than the existing link. Whatever is easier for power/cabling.

Though all else being equal I'd probably choose option 1, seems "tidier" somehow....

dee.jay:
Option 1 would be my choice.

It probably doesn't make any difference in this case, but if the AP were to die spectacularly you'll have no internet at all - whereas if the switch is first presumably you'll be able to still access the internet via some wired device.

What AP is it? Curious to know what AP's have integrated switches in them..

hushcoden:
So I'll go with option 1, thanks.
