Huawei HG612 Low Attainable Rate
« on: July 18, 2023, 03:52:08 PM »

I’ve had an ADSL2+ connection for some time as backup to my FTTP connection and used a Huawei HG612 to bridge this to my MikroTik router. This worked well with reasonable speeds - 20Mbps down, but a measly ~1Mbps upload. When I moved this line to AAISP I decided to upgrade to VDSL still using the HG612 expecting similar speeds to when I previously had FTTC (~60Mbps). However, the HG612 only synced at around 40Mbps. Swapping the HG612 for a ZyXel VMG8924-B10A I had retained immediately improved the sync rate to ~59Mbps.

So is my HG612 faulty or could any of the settings cause the sync to be so low?

If I need to replace it (the VMG8924-B10A is a bit too bulky) do I need to go to the second hand marketplace? I’m struggling to identify a new modem/router with a Broadcom chipset, the ZyXels all seem to be Mediatek.

It might be bulky, but the VMG8924-B10A is a good device.
