FTTP 'drip loop' - Is it a must?
« on: June 22, 2023, 06:24:33 PM »

After having FTTP installed (overhead), I got a little worried when I saw a lack of a 'drip loop' that I am used to seeing on the copper install. Is this something that should have been done? I understand that fibre has a minimum bend radius, so perhaps it is a factor to why it was direct into the wall.

TIA.

FTTP - I always think it from copper to the wall. Never believe in any true fibre optic glass from Openreach! Similiar to VM cable to the property but still on copper for 1Gig.

It's not from Openreach. Anyway, please try to keep it relevant because I am looking for advice in case I need to have remedial work done!

I can't think why it wouldn't have a drip loop for exactly the same reason as a normal cable would have one.

@adslmax - FTTP is exactly what the name suggests ie Fibre To The Premises and is not at all similar to VM cable which is an entirely different technology.

What are the exact reasons that there should be a drip loop? I am thinking that the main reason is water. Please let me know if I am wrong.

Anyway, I have queried and hopefully the installation team will advise soon. I ideally do not want to have to have work done immediately after install.

It's not about the effects on the cable, it's about the potential ingress of water into your premises.

Thanks for the clarifying that it is do with the potential water ingress. Looks like I should get them to fix it ASAP since it is overhead and quite exposed.

This is what silicone sealant is made for  :)

Well you're supposed to:

1) Drip loop
2) Hole is at a downwards angle through the wall so gravity prevents water going into the home
3) Silicone seal the hole or have a weather cover (ideally both I'd think to avoid insects getting into the wall)

That is what I thought. Two out of three of those have been satisfied. Hopefully there is enough slack to rectify it.

Someone relayed the information that the reason why a drip loop was not provided was because tightness of the loop can cause the fibre to break. Though I am not sure if I agree with that if the slack is sufficient and it adheres to the bend radius.

You have to be pretty determined to break a fibre.

I am not sure if I should push them to change it.

I'm not sure its worth the hassle either, but that excuse is pure BS.
