I think once people are off copper they test less. The odd person tests obsessively regardless of speed or type of service but are a minority.

With line stats gone, no rate adaption and consistent service any interest in testing seems to fade for most.

The lower the performance the more frequent the testing as minor issues trigger a big percentage loss.

Yeah deffo, I keep an eye on my line to see if the crappy ECI cab or the stupid DLM are making my life hard...
Once pure and stable fibre arrives I will just ignore it all  :)

Usually only when there is an issue, or maybe after I just had a new connection setup, isp migration that sort of thing.

Yeah its kind of linked to expected reliability, if you on a stable technology which is either max rate or no connection, and as long as it generally performs well, then the need to validate goes away.

Surely, you are 'testing' a connection all the time you are using it for something useful? If something doesn't load as quickly as it normally does, a VoIP call quality drops, a Netflix movie buffers, etc, you would notice. Hence I voted hourly.

And the irony is, the shoddy way FTTC has been marketed all these years, the absolute top benefit of FTTP is overlooked. Ad47uk over on ISPR/TBB laments regularly about how he will never need FTTP and nor will anyone else, has completely misunderstood the point of having full fibre. Yes it much faster, but infinitely more reliable too.

I voted when there is a problem.

But then I realised I do a speed test from my work PC daily as well as using it, because I need the upload speed to be good.

I have found FTTC reliable for me on VDSL, but I am within sight of the green cabinet too.

FTTP should be reliable if properly installed and maintained, but FTTC can be too in my experience with VDSL.
      - FTTP being marketed on pure speed.

Cheers, Tony

I voted "daily", but that was a lie, as I test several times a day when I’m monitoring things to see if I need to adjust settings, so hourly would be nearer the truth, but there was no option for "every n > 1 hours". I’m trying to see what target SNRM levels, down and up, I can get away with at the zero CRC errors level.

"Whenever there's a problem".

I do have a longstanding SHINE issue though and things went a bit mental a few weeks ago. Howver at the time I wasn't feeling too great and didnt have the energy to take on Openreach for them to come out and say the line is fine.    Which it normally is 99.9% of the time if I ignore the daily blip.

Why it went mad Ive no idea, but touch wood all is stable again.  Err  Secs were 0 for a few weeks.... until today. :/
It was a PITA when it went down as I stream a lot and rely on Alexa far more than I realised.

Try Starlink…

How's your Starlink behaving, mate?

I've noticed that XGSPON seems more vulnerable to imperfections in the optical path than GPON. 25GPON more demanding or much the same?

Well currently Starlink is in the box, I've been waiting for an AV guy to get it installed up on the roof.

However, it is amazingly slick. I've had to deploy it in the garden a number of times for my wife to be able to work because I ran into a problem with my hypervisor killing my FTTC connectivity (virtual router). Plug it in, turn it on, wait 10 minutes, internet, and 200+mbps of it. My wife has used it for a week in the garden, i.e. with some tree cover, and I've had zero reports of problems with it.

Should be up on Thursday. Planning to use Starlink as primary connection, and FTTC as backup. Toying with getting a 4G antenna up at some point too as there is 150Mbps in the right spot, and I think that is worth exploring.

My long term plan is to then replace Starlink with FTTP (one day) then take Starlink to the caravan and use that on roaming as you can turn that off and on at will.

Not heard of any issues with 25GPON, will have a look..

Mostly randomly – but on average, every 2 weeks or so just to make sure it's working as it should, but as soon as I spot a slowdown, I do some tests on various 'reliable' testers (the OOKLA 'App' from the store on Windows 10 seems to be extremely precise!).

Once you have been on your ISP long enough to know it's fine 24/7/365, you tend to test much less.. e.g. I rarely tested on BT after 6 months, only when it started to go below the MGALS (600-700) would I check, even then I would give it a few days before I would ring up, as I've experienced it sorting itself out within 3 days (High Radial Counts due to neighbours signing up by the boat load).

As you can see, in 24 months I have done 27 tests, some were twice, to be sure.
