How often do you test your connection?
« on: April 13, 2023, 11:55:35 AM »

Just curious. I know of people who on one extreme speed test hourly either manually or automated and review their BQM and speed tests / Sam Knows daily.

On the other there are those, like myself, who only look at telemetry or run tests when there's a problem even when they have all the data.

By telemetry I'm also talking xDSL and cable connection stats.

Presumably there are people in between. Which are you?

Typically for me, it's only when there's a problem. For example, if there's been an unexpected loss of service or if something feels slow, then I will delve into the stats, run speedtests, pingtests, and check BQM.

Since I have had issues with my connection playing up a bit during adverse weather, I am checking it when there is wind and rain to see if it's causing errors.

I sometimes may weekly or daily run a test just out of habit (and bordem) and may not even let it finish. I also may "test" the connection if I am changing settings locally or experimenting.

I voted "only when there's a problem" as that's typically the reason why I am reviewing the performance and stats. I think hourly and daily testing is unnecessary unless I am trying to pinpoint or provide diagnostics to the provider, so weekly and monthly is usually as frequent as it gets without reason.

Only when a problem exists, although since FTTC to 1 x FTTP with 1 x4g it isn’t very often. I think there are two camps. Those that use their service for what then need and only when they can’t look at possible issues, and those that want maximum speeds at all times and need to know it.  :-\

Probably about once every couple of weeks to check that it all looks as it should.

I'm briefly musing over what the folks who obsessively test would make of my service. On the one hand it is ridiculously fast, on the other it does vary somewhat but still remains ridiculously fast.

I check once per month, by habit. Usually on the first of the month . . . unless I forget.

I check my mobile broadband connection at least once a month, mainly to check the upload as it's the most important thing to me.

I've voted for "Only when there's a problem", but that's usually because of my ploutering!  :)

Obviously no-one or very few will admit to checking their connection hourly as they'll get bullied here for that, just like Adslmax got in the neck several times for checking his connection obsessively.

More often than "Only when there's a problem", but no particular routine either.

Although looking at my history, I'd say a lot more than I realised.

Only when I think about it, which I'd guess is about once a month on average.

We changed to FTTP late March so testing about three times a week to build up a baseline of data.  Normally I would only test a couple of times a month.

Not sure really, I mostly just log into the AA control panel pages now and again, but I do have DSLstats running and peer at that periodically if AA page shows something weird. For all my lamenting about only having FTTC, it's been pretty stable over the years, have lost some sync due to crosstalk but only had 2 or 3 service affecting faults since 2012. In fact, fast coming up on 10 years of having FTTC - Had Sky Fibre the day it was orderable, it was 40/2 back then, but Sky Fibre Pro was then available in June of 2012, I phoned an order through as soon as it was available.

It eventually settled at 72Mbps down, and nowadays I have around 62.

I think once people are off copper they test less. The odd person tests obsessively regardless of speed or type of service but are a minority.

With line stats gone, no rate adaption and consistent service any interest in testing seems to fade for most.

The lower the performance the more frequent the testing as minor issues trigger a big percentage loss.
