DHCP table and IP address
« on: April 01, 2023, 02:48:49 PM »

My router is configured to have DHCP server assign IPv4 addresses starting from 192.168.1.20 (Fritzbox 7530). Having forgotten that, I have assigned an out of range address to a device (192.168.1.3), but to my surprise, there were no problems with this device or it accessing the Internet. What are the symptoms of wrongly assigned address in the DHCP table?

Cheers.

The whole point of setting a range for for the DHCP server is exactly so that you can set static addresses on devices outside of that range without fear of confliction.

Your router's LAN port is probably using either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask of /24 or 255.255.255.0.

This means anything with an address between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 if router is .1 and 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.253 if router is .254 can access everything just fine.

The DHCP assignment address range is just that, an address range for assignment of addresses. It doesn't have any impact on reachability. If your DHCP range were in the wrong network to talk with the LAN port on your router it wouldn't work regardless.
