Do any UK ISPs install fibre test points in the CSP?
« on: March 29, 2023, 08:29:26 AM »

Was watching this video about a startup US FTTP provider:

https://youtu.be/E8258JtwCUc?t=524
They have a connector spliced in the CSP which allows them to check light levels outside the property after the splice.  Openreach don't do this from what I know.
I suppose this is an advantage in that you can check this splice without entering the house; disadvantage is an extra connection that could get dirty, maybe a bigger hole through the wall as the cable going through the wall now has connectors on both ends.

Is everyone in the UK doing this like Openreach where there are no connectors in the CSP and it is splices only in there, with unterminated cable coming out of the house to the CSP?  Or is this something that divides opinions here?

No test points.
My CSP is inside.  :)

I am not aware of any infrastructure provider that has an optical test point within a CSP external to the property.

Wont this effectively halve the number of customers they can have on each fibre?

No, it'll take 3 dB off the power due to the extra split.

It's largely pointless. The splice and internal cabling are tested at install time and if the splice goes bad it gets redone: that's what the spare fibre in the CSP is for.

Resplicing is a small job. Could even put a field fit connector on the end to test if resplice doesn't fix to prove the drop cable. For a technician to use the test connector they're already onsite anyway.

So its more that it it limits your range?  Definitely seems an odd choice to include a method to check signal levels that will inherently increase the chance of signal levels being bad.

Shouldn't be an issue. Optical power budgets are very wide and loss across PON distances minimal, it comes from splitting and splicing. No excuse for being anywhere near 3 dB away from the power budget bar a fault that should be fixed.

Budget for 1:128, build to 1:64. Can get extra range by increasing launch power at OLT and using more sensitive optics in ONTs if really needed.
