windows 10 shenanigans

What is this behavior of windows 10? I face errors like this from time to time. Sometimes windows defender is not working properly and sometimes I try to open pdf or file and whole explorer get stuck, I then force sign-out and login again in the user account.  I think I need to back up my data and reinstall windows.

In the screenshot, start search shows only half the area other half is greyed out. Before it was all greyed out, not showing anything. And now it's back to normal. after an hour or so.
