Speed of 5G vs distance
« on: February 09, 2023, 02:02:04 PM »

For those of you who are lucky enough to have access to 5G, can you tell me what the upstream+downstream throughput is like at various distances from the base station? That is : really close, 1 km away, several km away and then at extreme range.

All I have is a map I did when it went live in a town near me. EE

It’s hard to get line of sight where I am because of valleys but the 5G mast like 1.5miles away I get no signal.

I made that map whe it was exclusively 3.4Ghz though so ranges could be better now.

My nearest 5G mast is about 900m away, I get speeds on par with 3G (single digits mbps) and it wont stay connected, however to be fair to EE, 5G is not officially covering my postcode.

This is indoor testing.

Too many variables.

Which 5G bands do you want testing, n78, n28, n20, n8, n7, n3, n1?

Outdoor or indoor testing?

From a mobile or router?

My local 3 UK n78 mast is at Rushden and Diamonds football club.
I can walk down the road and give you as many speed tests you want from my 40gb test SIM and a 5g phone, would this be sufficient?

I can't be too specific, but near me (not at my home) 5G has appeared in some areas and I have also upgraded to a 5G phone. I'm on O2 (GiffGaff).
Basically I haven't noticed any improvement over 4G in any location and haven't got any better than I did/do on 4G, typically no more than 20mbps/3mbps down/up. That said I've not been testing systematically.
In some 5G areas, especially in London, 5G seems pretty rubbish even outdoors and drops to 4G indoors.
