I caught covid :(
« on: February 01, 2023, 11:37:22 AM »

I ended up catching covid at the start of December. I was really unlucky as I had only been socialising with 1 person for a couple of weeks prior. But they must have caught it and give it to me. I've had covid before but it didn't have much effect on me. However this time it did.

On the 8th of December I ended up having to call for a 999 ambulance because of low oxygen levels. I thought I'd just got that long big cold thing people have been getting. But when I got to the hospital they tested me for covid and it came up positive. They give me oxygen for 2 days then I didn't need it. I took some meds they give me and I was slowly recovering.

After 2 weeks I was discharged thinking the worse was over. I was wrong. I realised whenever I moved around my oxygen would drop (and recover after a minute). Even just moving around in bed would cause dips. Apparently its damaged my lungs so they can't generate enough oxygen when I start moving. The doctors hope my lungs will repair. But it can take weeks or months. So now I have to use supplimentary oxygen every time I walk about i.e. mainly to the bathroom.

From looking at the forums on this kind of thing it seems there are a lot of people with long/post covid symptoms that can go on for months.

So be careful out there people. It seems to be pot luck if covid hits you hard. One version of the virus you might fight off easy. But another version might knock you down like what happened to me.

I'm really sorry to hear that, and I hope it improves before too long. :fingers:

Thanks. It's lucky I can still get on the computer.

I can't imagine how conditions like this were to deal with before we had the Internet.

Caught the very back end of the Delta wave. Was brutal even for a guy in their early 40s. Absolutely neither a cold or the flu, both of which I've had multiple times.

Hope you make a recovery in time.

Hope you recover quickly

I caught COVID for the first time in November, made the mistake of going on holiday which involved plane's and a cruise ship.

I'm a fully jabbed 50 something year old, never normally ill, never smoked, but it really affected me, but luckily no lasting symptoms I'm aware of.

Thanks everyone,

The main symptom I have now is every time I move around my oxygen levels drop. I have some supplemental oxygen that I turn on when I want to move.

I think covid damaged my lungs from the x-ray I had done. I've got another hospital appointment hopefully at the end of the month to have another x-ray and see what they can do.

From what Ive been reading it can take people months to get past 'long covid'. I don't mind waiting it out as long as I know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Sorry to hear all that. Hope you recover quickly.

I think people seriously underestimate the potency of COVID in general, because of how light their initial infections were.

However, following the mass immunisation, our immunity is waining. Additionally, new variants appear. These new variants are not less severe in strength, as media tell us. They still kill, especially those that are unvaccinated. It's only because of being vaccinated, the *symptoms* of an infection are less noticeable and less severe.

I firmly believe that mask wearing should be reintroduced, especially in winter months and crowded spaces like public transport or in school, and I'm very concerned to see that gradually, we revert to our old habits. For example, in my local church, the priest hasn't been disinfecting his hands before distribution of communion for months now. I'm one of the very very few that disinfects their keyboard in the office.

All that really concerns me. But also how little basic information people have about how vaccines work and how viruses mutate.

Finally something we agree on.

While it may seem overkill, I'm basically still in lockdown as mum is extremely vulnerable and as someone with Asthma, I can't afford reduced lung capacity either.  It frustrates me no end that people refused mask wearing even when they were supposed to, prevented me even risking the local shops.

We still down delivery boxes in Dettol and the content I tend to leave a few days, or sanitise my hands right after touching them.  You tell most people that, they think you're insane.

It's a forum, as the name suggests, one is welcome to express their opinion. We don't have to agree on anything, actually. I appreciate your views on broadband, and so you should appreciate mine, too.

Yes, I disinfect shopping too and such like. I still wear a mask in my work. People are very understanding actually, especially that I deal with a lot of people. So, my experience is quite positive in this respect.

Hope you're continuing to improve, Bowdon. The chances of hospitalisation do seem to increase with subsequent infections.

I've had Covid once after attending a funeral, even though I was being careful. Unfortunately the in-laws I was staying with were not as careful as me. My infection varied between cold and flu, depending on whether I had taken ibuprofen, but it's taken me about a year to get to a point where I can walk several miles once more. I consider myself lucky I caught it only about 3 months after my third booster so it wasn't too bad, but as I am under 50 and have no underlying conditions, I won't be offered any more boosters (I pay for my flu vaccine, I'd happily do the same for a covid booster).

I still avoid crowded situations mask free (so no pubs, restaurants, etc) and wipe down all deliveries.

I want to go back to a normal life, but not at the cost of a second or third infection which could be life changing.

Honestly when I hear people say "post pandemic" it makes me want to scream.  It never ended, just everyone collectively decided "sod it", leaving vulnerable people still in lockdown.

Had people taken the mask mandate seriously, we might have stopped it before it became endemic.  I feel like I'm living on borrowed time in a different dimension to everyone else, and I don't like to say that especially on here as I know Weavers situation is a whole lot worse and was long before the pandemic.   But I feel this was entirely preventable, but the rich and the selfish put their pockets and short-term discomfort before everyones health.  Its hard to see an end to this.

I agree Alex. Fundamentally though, society has changed and is now largely only interested in themselves and not in looking out for others.

If the world had taken it all seriously and properly isolated during initial lockdown, then the virus would have run out of patients to spread to and it could have been over in 4-8 weeks.
