ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A or XMG3927-B50A for VDSL2
« on: January 25, 2023, 08:41:08 AM »

Hi, I have  Hg612 that has performed admirably over the years (in modem mode with routing and QOS done by a ubiquity ER-X), I am 800m from my PCP and that is  <500m from the cabinet

The cabinet is a Huawei and vectoring is (5) unconfigured, GFast was available from my cabinet.

I have access to a ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A and a xmg3927-b50a (both with newer chipsets than my HG612) and the VMG1312-B10A at least has better filtering (although I already have a 5C master socket, so that might not help).

My question is are either of these like to use more tones than my HG612?
At my distance, I would not expect a sync increase and am happy with my downloads, but I would like more uploads. (Cake QOS is capping my speeds to about 44/8 to keep latency down).

Custom firmware is definitely available for the  VMG1312-B10A, not sure about the xmg3927-b50a.

I will be running both in modem mode so don't care about the wifi performance of the xmg3927-b50a.
Not knowing gfast, are the vectoring group sizes and profile 30a enabled by default in the cabs? (I.e. should I see anything different if I plug the  VMG1312-B10A in) will it have any effect at all running VDSl2

From readinghte forum, the VMG1312-B10A seems like a no- brainer to test, but is the xmg3927-b50a worth testing at all?

I would say that every line is different and you should test everything.

I bought a VMG1312-B10A and actually found it worse and went back to my HG612. My original HG612 was installed 11 years ago this year!

Agree with @dee.jay - every line is different and all that stuff about matching chipsets is nonsense.

My line was really bad and it made no difference whether I had Lantiq or Broadcom based modems. They've done something to the line and it's very stable now with my Fritzbox (Lantiq-based), despite being connected to a Broadcom cabinet.

Also, very much depends on the firmware, too. For example, even though I tried Draytek and Fritzbox (both based on the same chipset), it was the latter that was more stable. Previously, though, when I was on ADSL2+, it was Draytek that did best.

So, you have to experiment and check for yourself.

G.Fast is a completely separate technology to VDSL2 and has no direct correlation.

The Zyxel xmg3927-b50a simply supports G.Fast while the other 2 modems do not but it will not be used either way.

VDSL2 profile 30a isn't used in the UK at all.
It's all profile 17a.

Vectoring is rarely used on VDSL2 cabinets. It was only ever selectively deployed on a few specific BDUK funded cabinets in order to increase the number of distant properties that could obtain SuperFast speeds (30Mb/s+) because the funding was based on how many SuperFast properties were enabled.
The Vectoring kit is pricey so never deployed commercially.

I would expect both Zyxels to sync faster on most lines but as already said every line is different.
Some lines will actually perform better on the HG612.

It should only take a few mins to quickly sync each modem and see the sync speeds.

Nothing synced faster (or more stable) on my line than a vmg1312-b10a

Thanks all,

I will evaluate both units and feed back the results.

Any got-yer's I should know about, known bugs or preferred software versions?

You will probably find the VMG1312 wins, it did on my line compared to two xmg3927s.

To be extra safe it's best to wait about 30 mins between each modem swap otherwise the DLM system can think your line is unstable and apply banding, and that can be hard to get rid of.
If you are only trying a couple of modems you'll be fine as long as you don't keep swapping them about.

That's a healthy downstream increase over the HG612. A very slight upstream drop, but nothing of significance.  :)

Morning, thanks all,

Yes looks good so far!
Looks like I gained a tone, which actually surprised me. I will leave a week or so before I try the other unit.

Running Johnson's 1312-B10A-17-jumbo-tel-x6-stats1.1-cmd.bin build, I have a question about baby jumbo frames, is that active by default in bridge mode (there is no MTU box in the config page) or do I need to configure via the cli?

Now, that is a result!

I might try mine again, it's been a few years and line conditions have changed - worth a go.

VMG8324-B10A & VMG8924-b10A definitely work best for me on my line and marginally better (3.5Mbps) than the HG612 & 1312-B10D.
The VMG8324-B10A, VMG8924-B10A & VMG1312-B10A all have the same BCM63168 chipset and additional noise filter so I would expect them to give similar results.

Not tried a Zyxel XMG3927 kind of wish I had.  You mention g.fast so that would exclude the models in the first paragraph.

Mine is XMG3927-B50A (best router for G.fast support and also VDSL2 support)

My previous VDSL on XMG3927-B50A on VDSL2 work best with this firmware:  5.17(ABMT.6)C0 rather than 5.13(ABMT.0)C0 but G.fast are best on this firmware: 5.13(ABMT.0)C0 (because of issues with wifi)
firmware here: https://www.zyxel.com/global/en/support/download?model=xmg3927-b50a

Thanks for the tip on the firmware, I will update the unit to5.17 before testing out the XMG3927-B50A. No custom firmware for this model?

The VMG1312-B10A is performing very well so far and I have been able to dial down the overhead left for QOS on my router. So far in fact that I am wondering if something is still enabled on the modem?
QOS is set to disabled on the modems first tab, but I wonder if some of the que priorities  may still be being applied?

Been up 2.5 days so far:
Uptime:                    2 days 13 hours 10 min 18 sec
Resyncs:                   1 (since 25 Jan 2023 18:06:37)

Line attenuation (dB):     21.6      0.0
Signal attenuation (dB):   Not monitored
Connection speed (kbps):   60062      8253
SNR margin (dB):           4.6      6.0
Power (dBm):               12.8      4.9
Interleave depth:          4      1
INP:                       52.00      0
G.INP:                     Enabled      Not enabled
Vectoring status:          5 (VECT_UNCONFIGURED)

RSCorr/RS (%):             0.2604      0.0205
RSUnCorr/RS (%):           0.0000      0.0000
ES/hour:                   0.41      6.67

might leave it a little longer before swapping to the XMG3927-B50A, but will probably start getting it configured this weekend.

Are you on 40/10 because the upload seem very low if you are on 80/20 FTTC?
