yes, this is not my first rodeo.
OK, if you have done a WiFi survey using alternative tools, and happy with results, then that's fine. The Airport App may be of use for others reading this thread at some point.

Hi,

I use a couple of TP-Link RE300 Wifi access points connected to my Zyxel router in order to boost WiFi.

They have been very good, and provide both 2.4GHz and 5GHz when my Zyxel router only has 2.4GHz.

They support WiFi calling and have been good for my family and I to use NOW TV through as well.

I also use some TP-Link AV1000 powerline adapters to help me work from home well, which have been great.

Kind regards,
     Tony

.

The EAP615-Wall may be a better medium term future proofing option though

They can be configured as stand-alone or with controller like unifi.

Eap615 is nice with so many network ports.

a controller to control them all in the 1 place would certainly be advantageous

Controller can be a docker image:
https://hub.docker.com/r/mbentley/omada-controller

There's physical controllers but I'm not interested in stumping up nearly £70 for an oc200.

They also support wireless mesh, controller needs to be on for fast roaming to work.

If you have an iPhone, install the Apple Airport utility and do a WiFi scan in the areas you need WiFi, you may find the reason you are getting poor performance is neighbours WiFi. You will see all the visible networks along with channels and signal strength. Adding more APs may compound the issue, sometimes with WiFi less is more.

Unifi AP's are only around £120 each... though by the time you've bought a few... :)

I have WiFi 6 AP's from Unifi and internally get 500-700Mbps up/down on them (with devices that'll support WiFi 6 of course)

There was a time where top of the line ASUS was around that price, how times have changed.

Curious how Unifi got so popular, some years back never heard of them, and now suddenly so many in the UK have one.

Just had a look at their website, they put some thought into the software, I Can see why it is popular now.

Follow up question, regarding Switch with Poe to power such APs

Would be looking for an 8 port Switch with at least a few ports capable of powering the APs via PoE

Ideally I’d like it to be a managed Switch of some of some sorts.
At the moment my ASUS router allows to use port 1 and 2 in LAG which I use for my NAS.
The possibility of configuring ports to a vlan would be nice (for IoT devices or a port that goes thru a VPN).

I’ll be using the switch and APs with an opnsense router, and most likely going with TpLink APs

May also add 1 or 2 cameras which preferably also be powered by PoE

Depends on the AP, some need PoE+ due to higher current draw.

I see a lot discussion but no post where you decided specifically which model you plan to use.  Although just getting a PoE+ switch is probably a safe bet in case you upgrade them later.

Reply 7 was where I provisionally picked a specific model
However, saying just a pie+ Switch doesn’t really answer the question about recommendations

That's because it largely doesn't matter, it will more come down to cost and availability.  I've always stuck with Netgear personally, but I know other people have different ideas.

If you do only need PoE with no consideration for PoE+, prices will be a lot lower.  The price of the ones I use have gone through the roof due to component shortages.
