So over in Australia, the National Broadband Network Company have rolled out Save Our Showtime and Robust Overhead Channel.

SOS and ROC for short.

  • Save Our Showtime (SOS) - SOS is a feature which rapidly responds to spontaneous changes in copper network conditions which would typically result in a dropout.
  • Robust Overhead Channel (ROC) - ROC is a complementary feature to SOS which enables nbn to maintain connectivity with your modem in the event of spontaneous changes in copper network conditions.

The question is: "Will I remain awake if I attempt to read that document?"

Probably not, it's more of a curiosity than anything else, I'm hunting down supported router models as it's interesting to find what the manufacturer has had to do, new DSL driver etc.

If you use an unsupported modem and there's a fault caused by sos/roc being enabled, they refuse to support you until you buy a new supported modem router.

VDSL modems that use an Intel or Lantiq chipset may no longer work or may require a firmware update to work.
