YouFibre Install Day!
« on: July 04, 2022, 08:32:42 AM »

Well, the day's arrived!  YouFibre's being installed right now!

Going great so far -- just discussed ONT placement.  The copper currently runs down from the eaves into the porch at about waist-height, immediately goes round a corner, then through the porch wall into the hall.

I said I'm more than happy for the fibre to come straight down the outside wall and directly into the hall on the other wall.  Saves them having to drill one extra hole and bend the fibre around.

They kindly warned me that there'll likely be a bit of blow-out on the pebble-dashing on the exterior wall, which I said I'm fine with.  I can fix that up and re-paint, no problem.  Appreciated that he described exactly the route they'd follow -- basically following the copper, but going lower down the wall and entering further back along the wall so it runs straight into the hall.

They're over at the pole right now, sorting out that end first.

[sorry mods, I think I've posted this in the wrong section!  Please move if needed!]

Ok, the ONT's on the wall now.  It's a big lad!

A bit of consternation that there's no green light on the ONT yet though :(

...uh-oh... phone calls are being made!

Well, after a brief delay, it's all up and running!

Comfortably seeing 500 down, often more like 600.  Upstream's around the targeted 500 too.  Wow.

Sites like speedtest.net and fast.com report <8ms pings even on WiFi.

IPv6 appears to be complete -- pfSense picked up a CGNAT'ed private v4 and a global v6 via DHCP.  After fiddling with settings, it seems my local machines are picking up proper v6 addresses too.

The installers did a great job.  I went through the motions of setting up the Eero router, since that's what they need to see.  Nice bit of kit -- shame I won't be using it!

The ONT's a chunky lad, with an RJ45 socket that (for some reason) is a b*stard to get a plug into, but that's a vanishingly tiny gripe, heh.

Let's leave it here . . . as you're not discussing FTTP Rollout:)

The ONT does look a little on the large side. It's my colour but I don't recognise it. Do you know the make and model, please?

It'll be an adtran 621 (I think, can't see a VoIP port!)

Thank you. Investigating the Adtran web-site and comparing images, I believe the installed unit is a SDX 621i.

That’s the one, yes!

And bad news… it’s kaput! Hehehe.

Internet suddenly dropped at about 1715.  Went out to the hall, and the troublesome fibre LED that the installers had struggled to get to go green had gone red again!

Called YouFibre who were really great in all fairness.  He tried to push the config out to the ONT repeatedly, but his system kept returning an error.  He checked with a colleague to make sure they weren’t also having a problem, then asked me to unplug and reinsert the fibre cable.

Still no joy.  But I should be getting a visit tomorrow to investigate.

I’m the meantime, I’ve brought the old HG612 back downstairs and restored my Vodafone VDSL pfSense config.

One of those things, isn’t it?  First customer on the CBT and all :)

And thanks for all your info via DM, Mark07!   I did wanna check what the proper prefix length setting should be, but I think that can wait until that the ONT’s happy again!

Strange it just dropped! Can you do me a power cycle of the ONT and leave it powered on?

Yeah definitely a /64 :)

Hehe.  I do indeed!

Mark07 -- I've power-cycled and it's back to the steady red LED.  Will leave it to it!  Thanks!

Damn, let us know the outcome of the engineer visit, very strange for it to just fall over like that

Also that red light normally means there's no light getting to your ONT, i wonder if somethings happened at the CBT or further down the line

Apparently the reading they were getting (presumably signal level) was a solid 19, which the guy on the phone confirmed and said was fine.

Possibly a daft question — if I were to unplug the fibre cable and look at the end, should I see any kind of light?  I did have a quick peek when support asked me to replug it, but there appears to be a cap over the end or something?  I didn’t poke at it because I don’t know what I’m doing :)

(I mean… that doesn’t usually stop me, but this time I thought it’d be unwise, heh)

Hmmm cap on the end? I'm not sure if you'd see light to be honest, im not recommending you peer down it but could always use the 'point the camera on your phone at it and see if you see any light' trick
