Any file transfers P2P recommendations?
« on: July 07, 2022, 06:24:21 PM »

Does anyone know of any program that is easy to install (or run) and easy to setup so I can send files to a friend directly?

At the moment I'm using a messenger program that we type on and its a side feature that allows files to be sent. But it seems to restrict the transfer speed.

Is FileZilla still the number one program for this type of thing?

What size and number of files are you considering?

Up to about 10 MB email attachments should suffice.

Do you actually need direct P2P or would dropbox type solutions be okay. Google Drive / Microsoft OneDrive / Apple iCloud all offer cloud-based file sharing if you have an account. Then there are many other services offering file sharing. I have used pCloud in the past.

If you can ssh to your friend's device then rsync or similar (e.g. WinSCP on Windows) would be good.

FileZilla would require that the recipient runs a server. FTP is a fairly antiquated protocol even with modern security layered on it.

Things to consider. Your friend’s machine will need to have a real IPv6/IPv4 address (or else faff around with NAT), so yay for IPv6 !

Your friend’s machine will need to have a firewall hole set up so you can talk to it. Maybe vice versa.

Or you do the whole thing via an intermediary server, as mentioned earlier.

As above, it depends on the type and size of files but other options include Dropbox, WeTransfer, IRC..

That kinda depends how literally you take peer to peer.

For example, I have a friend in Texas who we send files to each other all the time over XMPP using a proxy server.  The proxy server is on my LAN.

So while its not exactly peer to peer, its effectively close enough as he sends directly to my local server and in turn that gets sent on to me over the LAN.   Its a bit sketchy with larger file sizes though, or at least it WAS until I got FTTP where its suddenly MUCH more stable.

I'm not necessarily recommending doing it exactly that way, just highlighting that if you have a proxy server on one side, only that side needs to open ports and for all intents and purposes its peer to peer, as the man in the middle is still yourself.
