cleaning a tft monitor
« on: August 16, 2008, 05:34:21 PM »

TD is basking still in the glories of his new TFT widescreen monitor, lovely, but................horror of horrors........has spotted a big, greasy thumbprint in the corner.  :( (must have put it there whilst unpacking/setting it up.

What is the best way to clean a TFT?
I have tried one of these microfibre cloths used for cleaning camera lenses, but it wont shift, I think I may be reluctant to put too much pressure on the screen.

Any advice gratefully received.

Baby wipes, or at least that's what's recommended to me by a PC Geek.
(But having never cleaned my monitor's can't say if it works or not)

TD   -  I use a screen spray by Emtec, and a very soft cloth ....  I use it on our Flat Screen TV's as well  ....  I don't need to put a lot of pressure on  .... and it works  !!!  :)

I use baby wipes from Asda and then a soft tissue.
Daughter gave me some 'Screen-Clene' wipes which are for the job but you still have to wipe with a soft tissue and the screen doesn't smell half as nice as with baby wipes.  :D

Thank you, lots of suggestions.............can just see the girl in our local (and only) little corner store when I ask for baby wipes. The gossip will be round the place before I got home.

Tell her your going to a festival  ;)

I got a soft cloth for my work laptop and for when colleagues put their fingers on the screen  >:( i find the old trick of breathing on the screen and then rubbing works well. unfortunately I always end up with stuff on the screen as I'm using it in the field to test in most weathers. and as it's a touch screen I'm now getting a smooth patch in the middle.

Just as a matter of curiosity, have you tried covering the screen in cling film ?

There should be something available.
Lets face it, they make covers for SatNavs, ipods, Mp3 players etc........

Don't try this in-conjunction with Dave's last post.
Especially if your other half is around.

I use Mr Muscle glass and window cleaner sprayed onto kitchen roll.

I got my first TFT way back in about  2001, and believe it or not that monitor is still going strong to who I passed it on to recently.  Although Ive tried the proper monitor cleaners (and baby wipes) I still always rate Mr Muscle and kitchen roll for my monitors and laptop screens since it doesnt streak or leave any residue.
