FTTC do I still need a landline
« on: January 28, 2022, 11:04:37 PM »

Hi guys,

Been googling this for a while but I am still confused.

Do I still need a landline with FTTC? Have lost touch with this stuff over the past few years so no longer sure.

I was looking on the Zen site and they seem to indicate not.

I know that PSTN is going to be turned off circa 2025 so perhaps things have change in the last few years re landline requirement.

Last question would a landline also be required with G.Fast?

Many thanks for any info provided
Cheers

Hi,

Landline not required with fttc/sogea or g.fast/sogfast

Thanks for your reply.

I am with Uno on the 40/10 package. Landline with Pulse8 (Openreach) which I rarely use and in any case could break out my ATA box if needed.

So would I have to ask Uno if I could run the BB and cancel the landline?

It's just that on Uno's website it says:

Active phone line required for entire service duration for copper services.

Cheers

If Uno offered BT Wholesale SOGEA, you could convert to FTTC only, no landline
If I remember correctly, UNO are a TalkTalk reseller, TalkTalk do not offer a stand alone FTTC service.

Looking at their price list, there is no mention of SOGEA or SOGFAST:

@risk_reversal For FTTC and G.Fast the incoming connection to the premises is a copper line so you will still need to have a landline and pay line rental. I think @Meritez is discussing SOGEA lines which are copper lines without a Phone service on them, very few CPs offer this, I know A&A are one of them.

BT offer FTTC without a phone service and it's £5 per month cheaper than having it with a phone.

My BB connection with Uno is via TTB but they also have BT offerings.

I will contact Uno and ask them.....

Openreach now sell broadband without a PSTN landline.
On FTTC it's called SOGEA and on G.Fast it is called SOGFast.
However that does not mean you can automatically take out broadband without a landline from any provider.

It's entirely up to the ISP what they wish to sell.
For example Sky do not sell broadband without bundling voice with it. Sky purchase SOGEA from Openreach and bundle a voice package with it using VOIP.

BT do the same thing. They purchase SOGEA and add VOIP on top. They call their VOIP "Digital Voice".
BT do offer a broadband only option now though. It's usually the exact same price as their broadband with Digital Voice though.

That sounds like Uno don't offer standalone broadband.

Broadband is cheaper when you take WLR (Wholesale line rental).
At the moment your broadband with Uno is discounted because you pay another provider line rental.
If Uno does have a SOGEA offering it would be dearer than you pay them now.

As Tubaman has said, it is actually £5/m cheaper.

I've not been keeping up then.
It was the same price for a while when it launched. Then it was discounted £5 in a deal. They obviously made the permanent.
