Nerdy info
« on: January 28, 2022, 11:19:18 AM »

A bit of 'nerdy info' for those that like this kind of thing ....

During 2021, 62,000 petabytes of data was consumed, on premises connected to the OR BB network !!! 1 PB = 1 million GB.

20% up on 2020 ..... and 200% up on 2019 (pre-pandemic).

Onwards and upwards, towards the exabyte range!  :D

There was time when the Exabyte range was 20-40GB

Today I learnt there was a manufacturer called Exabyte

Those amount seem insane as the figures seem too large for me visualise.  The pandemic has changed what we do and how we do it.   We are so reliant on technology and content delivery.  It's forced more people than ever before to make use of the Internet, theres a age group who are getting used to face-timing and using social media for the first time.  I suspect many of them would never have bothered if it were not for covid-19.

Puts into perspective (or rather it doesnt) a task I started looking at earlier of trying to see if I could perhaps free up some storage.  Whilst 900KB may not seem much to add to a post, its surprising how over the years it can add-up...  especially when they record the most minute changes in frequent linestats and speedtests.  :/

In my Swedish class, taught over the internet using Zoom, there is an 85-year old student, intelligent and embracing the internet. I haven’t yet asked her if she has been a computer user for 60 years or is a new enthusiast due to COVID, at the other extreme.

This is why I can't understand my familiy.  One of my cousins had a baby in 2020 and I can no longer contact her as according to my other cousin "she doesnt use the Internet any more".  I find that VERY hard to believe as it makes no sense.  But her parents who ARE still on FB but rarely post anything, haven't even updated the photo of the baby after her first birthday, makes me really depressed as being stuck inside to keep my mother safe from Covid means its the only way I could see the baby grow.

I mean I get it if she doesn't want to share with the world, but if even her parents and sister don't have a recent photo to share privately with family, that is weird to me.

I don't have their address and for some reason don't seem very forthcoming on providing it.

Part of the problem is my grandmother demanded all attention so made us out that me and my mum were anti-social and there seems to be some long-seeded resentment to that, even though its not true, at least for me.

Its one of those cases where it went on for so long and with my own anxiety, its hard to get back in.

If my maths is correct, the article says approx. 17,000,000 connections, so that's averaging almost exactly 10GB per connection per day.

I wonder if the 62,000 PB is up and down combined?

And how much data was 'consumed' to measure how much data was 'consumed' ?  :)

So it’s about social psychology not technology?
