Computer Planet
« on: January 27, 2022, 11:20:21 AM »

Hi.

My current PC does not have the required TPM hardware to run Windows 11 so I decided to upgrade and ordered a custom built PC from Computer Planet a month ago. My current PC was bought from them a few years ago, and has been a reliable work horse ever since.

Their web site has disappeared and searching for the company online I found a number of people posting Trust Pilot reviews saying that they had not had orders fulfilled and that the company has ceased trading.

I've raised a claim via my bank for a full refund on my credit card, but just wanted to check if anyone else had experience of this particular issue, and give a heads-up to anyone thinking of purchasing something from them - although as their web site is no longer accessible it shouldn't be possible to order anything.

The fact that the have an 'Active proposal to strike off' with Companies House - https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/06144113  - and have not filed any accounts since those of 2018 does not bode well.
I think you're doing the right thing by requesting a refund via your credit card.

It just goes to show that past performance is no guarantee of future performance.

I'll have to look elsewhere for another PC - does anyone have any recommendations?

I had a look but they would not allow me to spec a machine without a hard drive.

Computer Planet's website now displays this message:

Unfortunately due to impossible trading conditions caused by the shortage of NVIDIA graphics cards Computer Planet Ltd is no longer trading and has appointed Anderson Brookes IP Ltd to take control of the business as of 28/01/22 any questions can be directed to info@andersonbrookes.co.uk

In view of the message on Computer Planet's website I think you should advise the liquidator of any claim you may have as well as trying to get the money back from the credit card company.

Good idea.

I've ordered a PC from Punch Technology - cheaper than the one from Computer Planet. Novatech also don't allow you to specify a PC without any drives.

Telling the credit card company that the firm has gone into liquidation should make your claim with them much more straightforward.

I told them that during my claim registration. Just waiting for the results of their investigation now.

Over the years I have been well served by CCL Online, for custom built PCs, disks, some bits and a laptop.
Admittedly, the last PC I bought from them was in 2016.
I am not sure if you can buy disk-less machines, but playing with their configurator does allow you to have a machine built with a cheap SSD.

I'm going to swap the drives from my present PC to the new one. I know this is potentially a minefield as Windows will detect a new motherboard, but I have done it before and have been able to use it for a few years now. I'm just getting a new PC as the present one does not meet the criteria for Windows 11, and in any case it sounds like a helicopter taking off.

I could probably lubricate the processor fan, but that won't get Windows 11 installed...

This is perfect example of why you should always use a credit card for purchases (online or not), the credit card company is jointly liable should there be any problems.
