**Energy price rise closer to 100% increase**
« on: January 22, 2022, 10:07:07 AM »

The government and ofgem say April energy price are set to be capped by 50% price increase but energy price rise isn't 50% increase - it actually closer to 100% increase are really disgusting from Scottish Power as I did checked on British Gas - the same result. Been complaint this to my local MP.

Scottish Power current tariff £1044 per annum monthly direct debit £87 (tariff ended April 2022)
Scottish Power April tariff £2196 per annum monthly direct debit £183

Got reponse email from my local MP but someone do it on her behalf:

Dear Mr ***********

Thank you for your email to Lucy, who would like to clarify the steps the Government are taking to alleviate rising fuel costs. No-one should be struggling to afford to keep their home at a reasonable temperature in a modern society.

The Warm Home Discount is a key policy in the Government’s programme to tackle fuel poverty and the effects of rising energy prices on low-income households. Launched in April 2011, it has helped over 2.2 million low-income and vulnerable households, including individuals with a disability, each year with their energy costs. Lucy is pleased that the Energy White Paper committed to extending the scheme to at least 2025/26 and the Government is committed to expanding the spending envelope from the current £351 million to £475 million (in 2020 prices) per year, to reach over 750,000 more households in, or at risk of, fuel poverty. Later this year the Government will consult on reforms to the scheme from 2022 to better target fuel poverty.

Lucy welcomes the new £500 million Household Support Fund for vulnerable households who need some extra support over the winter months with the cost of essentials such as energy bills. The new Fund has been available to councils in England since October with councils able to distribute funding within local areas to directly help those who need it most. I would advise you to contact Telford & Wrekin Council to see what support you may be entitled to.

One of the principal ways in which we can tackle fuel poverty in the long-run is to improve the energy efficiency of homes. In the Clean Growth Strategy, the Government set out its aspiration for as many homes as possible to be Energy Performance Certificate B and C by 2035 where cost effective, affordable and practical, and to reach this standard by 2030 for fuel poor homes.

Kind regards

Tracey Humphreys

You are looking at the wrong thing.

All of the fixed tariffs being offered by all of the suppliers are of the order you are quoting.

The cap applies to the Standard Variable Tariff and that will be raised by around 50%.

When your current tariff expires DO NOTHING. You will drop on to the standard variable tariff.
