Please recommended a Mesh system.
« on: January 16, 2022, 05:59:39 PM »

I'd like to have a look at options to replace the Google Nest WiFi set up I've just got working.  :-\

It seems the Google system will not allow me to stream IPTV. Very strange but there you go!

I'd add this new Mesh system to either my EE Smart Router, or to the Zyxel XMG3927 that I have.
Thanks in advance.

Are you using a wired connection as lots of routers are very fussy about streaming IPTV via wi-fi, if that's what you are trying to do.

I've tried both. Neither work, but when I connect a client to a WiFi hot-spot on my phone it works fine.
The IPTV app works fine on my phone whilst connected to 4g, but as soon as I connect it to my WiFi streaming stops.

What kind of area are you trying to cover?

About 1800 Square feet all on the same floor (it's a bungalow) and as much of the garden as possible.

A single Mikrotik Audience will cover 20,000 square feet: https://mikrotik.com/product/audience
I can walk ten house down the road and still be connected.

Really!!? That seems impossible, especially given the very reasonable cost.

The Google Nest WiFi Router advertises itself as having a range of 120m², (about 1300sq ft).
Can this MikroTik Audience really cover 15x that?  :o

I have no complaints, there's a review and teardown here, the antenna array inside is pretty impressive: https://mikrotik-routeros.com/2019/10/mikrotik-audience-review-and-teardown/

by ten houses, I mean 1890 style terrace houses, the unit is by my front window, and I'm comfortably connected all the way down the road.

While I wait for the Audience to arrive I'm considering my options.
Obviously I have the choice of using either the EE supplied Smart Router or the Zyxel XMG3927.
I'm also thinking about whether it might be a good idea to put the Audience in the roof space or just centrally in the house. The idea behind putting it in the roof space is to get it above the walls (some of which are brick).
Any thoughts on any of those options would be great.

The Audience can be a router or an access point, depending on how you configure it.
Default configuration is an access point.

I've been looking over some of the set up "guides" for the Audience

I hope you're prepared for a number of questions on a thread near here soon!  ???
