Shell Energy - free upgrade from ADSL to VDSL
« on: January 24, 2022, 07:58:00 PM »

My brothers still on ADSL, only reason being it was the cheapest option at the time, and now his fortunes have improved (new full time job) we were going to upgrade his ADSL to FTTP when his contract expired.

He's just told me that two weeks ago he received an email from his ISP Shell Energy saying that he will be getting a free upgrade to "Superfast Fibre" and his average downloads could be up to three rimes faster, so I'm guessing he's getting a free upgrade to 40/10 VDSL. It also says to "rest assured, you don’t have to worry about a price increase at the end of your initial contract term"

Dependant on what he's being charged, pretty sure it was around £16, and if it stays the same then there's no point upgrading him, as that will be plenty fast enough for his needs.

Pretty sure I read somewhere else on here recently that someone got a free upgrade from ADSL to VDSL recently.

Yes I think it was now come to think of it, and I think he's supplied by TalkTalk, and I'm pretty sure that is who Shell Energy use.

@Burakkucat Are "they" - Openreach or whoever - kicking everyone off ADSL2/2+ and getting all those people onto FTTC ?

1. I got a free upgrade in 2006 from 0.5/0.5 Mbps ADSL to variable speed ADSLMax in my case at 1.75-2.00 Mbps / 0.55 Mbps, so downstream three or four times faster!

2. Then again in 2015 I got an upgrade to 21CN and ADSL2+ which increased my speed quite a lot because of various things, the additional 1-bit tones of ADSL2 helped a little but for me 3dB SNRM downstream and PhyR 100% reliability was an enormous deal, from 2.0 Mbps up to 3.0 Mbps downstream (current lines are 2.9-3.14 Mbps downstream sync rate and 400kbps - 650kbps upstream sync right now). So that would be 50% faster.

I think that’s the plan. Assume that with fibre rollout there is more FTTC capacity. It’s been mentioned before here and elsewhere

As far as I am aware, it is TalkTalk's current policy. Obviously I do not have knowledge of TalkTalk's (or, for that matter, Openreach's) internal master-plan.

Just so I understand it, doesn’t it have to be Openreach’s Master Plan? Because there could be a mixture of ISPs at a particular exchange so just TalkTalk shifting their own users would not necessarily by any means do the whole job; there could still be stubborn users living in the stone age signed up with other ISPs, no?

Yes, you are correct.

TalkTalk still have their own equipment at the serving telephony exchange to provide the voice service.

Openreach want's sogea or sotap with VoIP phone line

Talktalk want to hold on to their llu base for as long as possible as it's their base product, though I'm not sure how this effects the copper stop sell.
