Yep, ax supports USB (WAN5/6), but not wireless WAN (WAN3/4).

Wireless WAN is something different, you use the wireless adapter in the Draytek to tether via WiFi to a hotspot (eg phone/mifi device) for backup connectivity:

If you don't know why you would need it, then you don't need it  :)

It provides a method to use WiFi as a connection for the WAN (in addition to Ethernet/DSL/USB etc)

You are using USB dingle for 4G backup.

If you have a modern phone or MiFi router, you could create a hotspot, you connect the router to your phone via WiFi and the phone connects to Internet via 4G/5G etc. Or use a MiFi device, or connect to neigbours WiFi for backup etc. See pic on the link I sent previously, will make more sense.

Draytec 2527 now installed and configuration aided by export of VPN settings. Some great new features. So much for the price, besides the 1.8gb firewall thruput  :P

A change to the signature block is now required!  ;)

Hi G3uiss

Congrats on new router... it'll be a couple of months or so before I see one

Wifi WAN - not an option for our clients given the bandwidth usage and forgive me, but is that not the same as 4G dongle, which may work better then wifi wan as it is direct to router rather then making a wifi connection to hotspot and mobile or other device then making WAN connection.  As you know, we have 4G dongles in use on drayteks which work lovely.

Also, if using VPN through mobile data, the mobile data provider have to usually open VPN ports on their networks first

Many thanks

John

Good news indeed.
Just keep checking the BTw availability checker.
https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL
Once the dist pole CBT has been fitted should not be that long but obviously site locations vary.
In my case, once the CBT had been installed and terminated in the local footway chamber it was only a few weeks before an order could be placed.

You are probably lucky being aerial fed as the installation is usually much easier and faster than UG distribution especially in older properties where the existing POTS copper is very likely to be DIG without ducting, although, even with a ducted installation the chances of running fibre directly to the existing master socket is usually very slim, the local FTTP installations I have observed to date have either ran fibre directly from the footway chambers or adjacent toby box or broke into the existing copper duct near the dwellings and ran fibre externally from there to a new wall entry point.

One word of caution with aerial distribution FTTP installation.
Ensure the ONT is fitted at a point which suits you with respect to Wi-Fi coverage as OR, or their sub-contractors, will site the router beside the ONT and from my experience won't relocate the ONT without additional cost to you.
I refer to my recent experience here with my sisters OH dist FTTP installation:

Not sure what you mean as OpenVPN works over Three and Vodafone (VOXI and Lebara tested) without any fiddling at all.  The only catch is when the network gets congested it murders UDP traffic.

I should probably try switching them over to TCP.

Oh that's painful, so near and yet so far.

Believe me when I say he's a lot nearer than you think - this PON was originally shelved for high-cost  ;)
