NTE5C recap
« on: January 09, 2022, 01:34:27 AM »

Burakkucat recently said the NTE5C is a "junk device". Re the latest ones still junk? Is this just because of their fragility, SSFP easily knocked by hoovers? Or do they have inferior performance compared to the NTE5A ?

I think the performance is just the same as the 5A if you get a good one but the build quality is nowhere near as good. Clearly built to a price unfortunately.

The Mk 4 SSFP of the NET5/C is electronically identical to the Mk 3 SSFP (which only fits the NTE5/A).

Ah, good to know about the Mk4 SSFP. That was the crucial thing for me.

My MK4+NTE5C combo, fitted without my agreement, but what can you do, is not in a place where it’s vulnerable to knocks or disturbance. It’s moderately high up on the wall, and a 1m cable goes into a modem on an open rack right next to it.

What’s cheap about it?

I thought you had the Mk 4 SSFP replaced with just a telephony FP and then plugged the modem using a patch lead with a "BT Plug" (pins 2 & 5) at one end & a 6P2C plug (pins 3 & 4) at the other.  :-\

They appear to be made on the cheap compared to their predecessor.

Not sure if it's the NTE5C, the MK4 or both, but the issue was it has clip in components.
The older models had the internal components soldered to the board.

Thanks J0hn. Unbelievable! (Shows my ignorance - sounds vaguely like the breadboards I remember from 45 years ago.)

I wish I could get rid of my NTE5C.

Indeed. I can’t remember. I’ll ask my beloved to take a pic and see where we got to with that. It’s coming back to me now you’ve reminded me. The memory loss thing is scary as well.

Presumably there will be problems with the non-soldered units where mere contact pressure alone is ensuring the quality of the connection. If there is ever any contamination or corrosion, or if the contact pressure decreases for any reason, then, as we know, you get a horrible diode-type effect with nonlinearity and higher resistance. But then this is indoor use only, so can hope the units will be ok long-term.

It's just the base NTE5C. The Mk 4 SSFP, fortunately, has soldered in components.
