G.fast has gone dead
« on: January 23, 2022, 01:10:13 PM »

My G.fast has gone dead two days ago, no DSL light at all.

I went over to check the cabinet today as I was unwell in bed for two days with flu.

I am shocked to see cable is broken up.

I am using backup smarty sim on the mini 4G router now.

https://one.network/?GB127308269 seems a possible culprit.

Looking at those two images, it appears there has been a fault either in the electricity mains distribution cable or in the cable supplying the power to the Huawei equipped "fibre" cabinet. It is from that cabinet that the power for the G.Fast pod (attached to the PCP) is derived. So I suspect that all your neighbours have also lost their VDSL2 based (FTTC) services.

I can confirm that there two mains LV joints with plastic Waveform at one end and PILC cables at the other. Most likely the local DNO repaired a fault and either damaged during excavation or the fault caused damage to Openreach's cables. But yes burakkucat could also be right however it is hard to tell from the photo but there could be some service cables exposed I know that DNO's will not re-connect a service without confirming what it feeds due primarily because of the risk of cross-polarity.

Hopefully Openreach will come out tomorrow to fix it. Confirmed my mum friend's who live opposite side of my house also got no Broadband sync as well.

Just thinking depends on the cause if it is a copper break that will need people to report it however if it is loss of supply to the DSLAM then no doubt BT Wholesale's NOC are well aware. In my personal experience I know the batteries typically last 6-12hrs and can be exchanged by Openreach I also know the DNO will respond quickly to repair the fault once access to the cabinet is provided as it is classed as off supply with OFGEM regs demanding restoration within 12 hours or penalties start mounting. If it just a service re-connection that can be complete as part of the cable fault repair within 3-4hrs deepening on the cable jointer - if it is an electrical issue of course.

If it is a copper damage might be more delays as perhaps the OR techs will be unwilling to work within the excavation with energised electrical cables without confirmation if it safe to do so.

Can't see an open fault on the PCP suggesting the FTTC cabinet is still up.

The electricity works were emergency repair not planned so certainly something broke.

Either the power failed and they are part way through repair, during other work they've disconnected the feed to the cabinet intentionally or inadvertently, or they've hit D-side copper.

Openreach aren't going to go near it until the power is made safe if it's copper and need to work with the power company if the issue is there.

However we know it is down because --

That assumes, of course, that Max's mum's friend has a VDSL2 based service and not a G.Fast based service.

Well no, the D-side cables serving both could be broken. If the DSLAM were down it'd usually have a fault open. Nothing right now according to Zen's BT Wholesale fault feed.

Obviously doesn't mean it isn't down but should have raised alarms.
