Zen DNS servers
« on: December 23, 2021, 03:40:20 PM »

My domain was moved to a different server around midday. Checking things out is being frustrated by Zen's DNS servers taking ages to reflect the changes.

Or rather some of Zen's DNS server...

This is the status of the updates.

212.23.3.100212.23.6.1002a02:8010:1::212:23:3:100
<my domain>
Y
N
Y
mail.<my domain>
Y
N
Y

Unfortunately 212.23.6.100 is the one they give out as the primary DNS.

The IPv6 seems to have settled down, for a while it was sometimes giving the new IP and sometimes the old!

After nearly 4 hours mail.<mydomain> has just updated on 212.23.6.100.

Still waiting for <mydomain> to update.

Oh, and I used one of the online DNS propagation checkers and the update has gone all round the world - just taking it's time on my own ISP!

And now it's changed back to the old IP address!

Is there a specific reason you are using your ISP DNS, rather than google (8.8.8.8) or cloudflare (1.1.1.1) ?

I think jelv hosts something on a public IP address connected to their zen internet connection.

Because I hadn't changed from the default settings on the Fritz box when I moved to Zen and theoretically using the ISP's DNS servers should be best as they are closest to me.

Until now I had no reason to change as I'm a great believer in the adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

212.23.3.100 has now started giving duff answers - neither that nor 212.23.6.100 are consistent, so it's definitely broke and I've fixed it by swapping to specify one Google and one Cloudflare for IPv4 and the same for IPv6.

No, nothing hosted on Zen and I don't use their mail, so now I know it's broke I've fixed it (see previous post).

I use the hosting provided by John (d2d4j) https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,18530.msg334345.html#msg334345

Glad its fixed, here is why you shouldn't use ISP DNS:

https://www.cloudflare.com/en-gb/learning/dns/what-is-1.1.1.1/

Scroll down to "Why use 1.1.1.1 instead of an ISP’s resolver?"

The difference on modern broadband is negligible at best.  I always used to obsess over DNS, I could "feel" the different in DNS lookups when loading web pages.

However I use full resolution on pfSense today and honestly, its the fastest its ever been.  Because it caches very effectively, as do the browsers these days I believe.
